GOLD! OR HOW TO MAKE IT TO THE TOP IN AMERICA
STARRING LINDA GEISER, SUE MATHYS, GÉRALDINE DULEX & SARAH BOSCH

We recently hosted the world premiere of GOLD! Or how to make it to the top in America, a new adaption of Blaise Cendrars' Gold by Endre M. Holéczy, directed by Sarah Bellin with a design concept by Michaela Müller. This feminist (re-)examination revisits Cendrars' historical fiction depicting the rise and fall of General John Augustus Sutter and casts a critical eye on exploitative tactics and the impact its legacy leaves us with today. Watch a recap of the evening here.

Hello! I’m Nathalie and I work as a Project Manager at the Swiss Consulate’s Department of Culture and Education. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden serves as my backyard, since I live right across the street from it. On a recent stroll through the garden, I came across dozens of site-specific birdhouses, that are scattered around the grounds. Each birdhouse is designed by a different artist as part of a temporary exhibition. The one that particularly caught my eye is a birdhouse painted with the design of the Swiss flag by American artist Tom Sachs. Sachs reflects on the meaning of borders and national identity to both humans and the birds that fly above them. The birdhouse serves as a symbolic as well as a literal shelter. Sachs explains, “To find home or shelter in Switzerland is the dream.” My journey took me the other way around, I left Switzerland six years ago and now call Brooklyn my home. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden allows me to find peace and shelter in the middle of an otherwise often hectic city. Take some time this summer to discover Tom Sachs’ birdhouse and the beautiful Brooklyn Botanic Garden!
