Ladies and Gentlemen (drum roll, please) . . . we have a new website, a new Speaker Series, and a new keelson (from a very old piece of wood). With the weather warming, so is the Buffalo Maritime Center.
First, the BMC is proud to unveil our new website! We've updated our look, our photos, the descriptions of our programs, and so much more. Be sure to visit us at www.buffalomaritimecenter.org and check out the new features. We want to thank the team at Otto & Friends for doing such a great job working with us to capture our vision.
Next, check out below for info on our new Speaker Series happening at the Honda Tent at the Replica Canal at Canalside. This will be a four part series starting with John Montague and Roger Allen talking about the Erie Canal and our Erie Canal Boat Project. If you haven't witnessed the comedy duo that is John and Roger, you're not going to want to miss it!
Finally, thanks to Jeff Higgins from Higgins Erectors, we now have a keelson and floor girders for the Erie Canal Boat, "Seneca Chief." Jeff donated this historic timber and the rigging equipment to move the wood. Walt Manalio and Greg Dudley did the major work of processing this 60' piece of lumber at Jeff's facility. Chelsea put together an entertaining (and educational!) video below showing the process. We'll have a follow up video soon which will show the delivery of the stock and the volunteers who helped move this massive piece.
By the way, the Longshed is back to being open Tuesdays through Sundays. Hope to see you there. Enjoy the spring weather, and we'll see you all soon!

To kick off Buffalo Maritime Center’s Summer Speaker Series on Thursday, May 26th at 6PM, join the Buffalo Maritime Center’s Founder and Master Boatbuilder as they discuss the history and the significance of the Erie Canal Boat, “Seneca Chief.” You’ll also hear about the progress as well plans for the future of this historic flagship that opened the Erie Canal in 1825.
The BMC Speaker Series will take place on Thursdays at the Honda Tent at Canalside (on the Replica Canal across from Explore & More). This event has a $10 entrance fee per person or $5 for BMC Members. Doors will open at 5PM and there will be a cash bar before and after the event. Be sure to get there early to get a great seat!
Upcoming BMC Speaker Series Events at Canalside will take place on June 9th, July 14th, and July 28th. More info about upcoming speakers coming soon! For questions, please email us at info@buffalomaritimecenter.org
The Buffalo Maritime Center is proud to announce the inaugural Fair Winds Gala: An Evening on the Waterfront! Please join us as we honor our Founder & President Emeritus, Dr. John Montague.
The gala will take place on the waterfront at Acqua on Niagara Street. With breathtaking views of the river, the event will feature an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, dinner & dancing while being entertained by Broadway star Robert Creighton. Our silent and live auctions will feature unique items & experiences, and all proceeds will benefit the Buffalo Maritime Center’s educational programming.
