Hey Everyone, and Happy (sorta) Spring!
There’s been a lot of action getting ready for the warmer weather here at the BMC. First, the Erie Canal Boat, Seneca Chief, is one frame away from having all of the frames on the keel. This is a major milestone in the construction process. Also, we have our community boats like the O.K. Clark and the Scajaquada being worked on so that we can launch them this summer. And the USS Trippe is being outfitted for a diesel engine, which will serve as the propulsion when she's not under sail. All of this work is happening thanks to a dedicated crew of BMC volunteers.
Next, we’re announcing an exciting event, our Fair Winds Gala, happening on Oct. 1st at the AcQua Restaurant on Niagara Street! This year, we are honoring our very own John Montague whose vision, determination, perseverance, and dedication to preserving maritime culture and craftsmanship has been the fair winds in the sails of BMC since it began. We’ll have more information about picking up tickets and how to become a sponsor soon, so stay tuned, but make sure to save the date!
Lastly, for all of you who might be interested in volunteering as a docent at the Longshed or as a mentor in our student boatbuilding programs, we are looking for you! Both roles are vital to the BMC, and they are wonderful ways to have an impact on our community. Be sure to check out the info below.
Though the flurries may still be flying, we’ll all be on the water soon enough. Enjoy the change in seasons and we’ll see you all soon!

     Brian Trzeciak
     Executive Director
     Buffalo Maritime Center
We’ve updated our BMC Membership Program to offer you more benefits! As a BMC Member, you not only get more benefits, you play an integral role in making our BMC programs happen. Click on the image below to see the details.
If you are a current BMC Member, you'll soon be receiving an updated membership card, so keep an eye out for that!
As we get closer to that beautiful Buffalo summer, we're already seeing an increase in visitors who want to see the progress and learn about the Erie Canal Boat Project. With more visitors comes the need for more docents!
You can be the person who inspires others to learn about the Erie Canal and how to get involved in this historic project. Click on the image below to sign up. And if you are interested, please join us at our Docent Meeting happening this Wednesday, April 6th at 4:30PM at the Longshed at Canalside.
The Mentoring Program is one of the most selective and rewarding volunteer opportunities that the Buffalo Maritime Center offers. Not only do our mentors work closely with students to build a boat, they also teach them important STEM principles (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and life skills that accompany the boatbuilding process.
This is no easy feat! Don’t worry though…we know that YOU would be great!
We want to continue to build a culture that encourages and inspires students to pursue careers in STEM and to gain some agency when it comes to the choices they have in their futures. If this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, please read below for more details and next steps.
     Requirements:
     - Prior boatbuilding experience is helpful, not required
     - Prior experience working with students is preferred, also not required
