FALL/WINTER, 2013

Dear VSS Parent,

It is that time of year where we wish each other a happy holiday and a New Year filled with good health, happiness and laughter.

Personally I have much to be thankful about – my family and friends and, of course, my extended VSS family.

Sending each of you my very best for a Happy New Year!

Arlene Wishnew
Head of School

VSS First Annual Holiday Dance a Huge Success

On Saturday, December 17th, VSS held its first annual Holiday Dance, "Mingle All the Way!” This wonderful event, hosted by the VSS PTA and the Student Council, was held at the Syosset Fire Department. VSS students in grades seven through twelve attended this lively mixer. A sumptuous buffet dinner was served and DJ Rob Herbst of Masterpiece Sound Entertainment Inc. rocked the house! There was a visit from Santa and each student received gifts including an iTunes gift card. The students enjoyed the evening and are looking forward to the next big holiday bash.

A big thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Don Russo who worked so hard to make the night so special for everyone. And, a thank you goes to the volunteers who helped clean up after the event.

VSS Donor Tree

Have you noticed our Donor Tree in the High School Lobby? The holiday season is a wonderful way to honor those who are important to us. It is a gift that keeps on giving here at VSS. By purchasing a gold leaf for $250.00 the recipient’s name will be in a prominent place for students, alumni, faculty and staff to see. Call the office for more information. (Your contribution is tax-deductible to the full extent of the law).

VSS PTA

The next PTA meeting is January 14 at 7 pm.

We all have a stake in educating our children, since our children are our future. Become an active participant in developing that future; to ensure that every child’s voice is heard.

There is a need for a powerful voice for our children. Our children need our support for VSS and their education. Our PTA provides loving relationships, meaningful work, and faith in something larger than ourselves.

Be an “agent of change” – voice your concerns and ideas with a group of like individuals who have a similar vision and hope for children, for education and for our community.

PLEASE – become an active participant by joining our meetings, either in person or from the comfort of your own home. For your convenience we have a FREE dial in number – 605 – 465-4700, code 985478#

Helping Hands

VSS students feel a strong sense of community pride and are involved in several volunteer efforts throughout the year.

A "Toys for Tots" Toy Drive, Coat Drive and Thanksgiving Dinner donation to Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN) are just some of the ways our VSS community helps our neighbors. Walk-A-Thon and carwash fundraising events were also held not only to raise funds but to increase the awareness and visibility of VSS within the Port Washington community.

If you know of an opportunity where VSS can help an area-based, non-profit organization, please email Michelle Hughes, mhughes@vincentsmithschool.org with your contact information.

Companies That Give Back

If you work for a company that believes in giving back, we would be interested in speaking with you. The School has several opportunities available in the spring and summer, 2014 for an organization(s) and their employee volunteers to visit VSS for the day to help beautify our grounds and facilities. The School provides a delicious picnic lunch on our grounds for all who participate. Call Michelle Hughes at extension 115 for more information and to sign up to help in 2014!
