Updating Lived Names and Pronouns Across UC Davis Systems
The UC system has made a strong commitment to gender recognition and lived names, as shown in the UC-wide presidential policy. With hundreds of information systems across UC Davis, figuring out how to update and use lived names and pronouns can be tricky.
We're focusing this edition on how to update lived name and pronouns in some of our most-used systems. Increasingly, these systems will propagate information to other campus systems.
UC Path
For UC Davis employees, including student employees, UC Path is the central, UC-wide HR and Payroll system. UC Path is the system of record for employee information, and it "feeds" data about employees into most UC Davis data systems. Consequently, updating your information in UC Path is the best way to get it into many other systems. UC Path supports setting a preferred name, in addition to a legal name:
From the navigation menu on the left, browse to Employee Actions > Personal Information > Personal Information Summary.
Expand the section titled Legal/Preferred Name.
Click the Add Preferred Name button, and fill out the form.
Be sure to Save after updating your information.
You can also provide voluntary information on gender identity and sexual orientation under Employee Actions > Personal Information > Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation. UC Path provides a detailed Frequently Asked Questions page on how this information is used to support diversity and inclusion.
This is also a great time to ensure that your home mailing address is current in UC Path. With open enrollment and tax season just around the corner and with many people having moved over the past year, you can save yourself a lot of hassle by having your correct mailing address in UC Path.
UC Davis Campus Directory
While it is initially populated based on information in UC Path (for employees) and Banner (for students), the UC Davis Campus Directory allows you to optionally specify pronouns, lived name, and gender. As the Campus Directory is used by an increasing number of other systems for directory information, updating your information here will automatically update it in many other systems:
Update the fields for lived name, pronouns, and gender.
Click Submit to save your changes.
While you're logged in to the Campus Directory, please take a moment to click the "Update My WarnMe Information" link. WarnMe is the campus alert system used to notify employees and students of critical information in emergency situations. You can provide a personal cell phone number, personal email address, and other contact information in addition to the data already in the campus directory to ensure that you receive timely notifications.
Zoom
Zoom recently added support for including and displaying pronouns in addition to the name you want displayed when you are in meetings.
Click the Sign In button to go to the Zoom web portal.
From the navigation menu on the left, click the Profile link.
In the top section, click the Edit link to edit your personal information.
You can edit the name that is displayed to others when you are in meetings under the Display Name field.
You can update pronouns in the Pronouns field, and you can specify how/when your pronouns are displayed to others in the "How would you like to share your pronouns?" drop-down.
Nearly 17,000 UC Davis faculty, staff, and students use the UC Davis Slack workspace at https://ucdavis.slack.com/. Slack recently introduced features to update and display pronouns as part of your Slack profile:
Log in at https://ucdavis.slack.com. Note that the UC Davis Slack workspace is not tied to your UC Davis computing account, so your passphrase may be (and hopefully is) different from your UC Davis credentials.
Click on the personal menu in the upper right corner, which may display your photo or your initials.
Click the "Edit profile" link.
Update the Full Name, Display Name, and/or Pronouns fields.
Most faculty and staff across use UC Davis Office 365 for email and calendaring. Office 365 can display a profile photo next to your name in Outlook on the desktop, web, or mobile clients. You can find instructions for adding/changing your Office 365 profile photo at: https://kb.ucdavis.edu/?id=1355
You can find directions for changing your UC Davis email address at: https://kb.ucdavis.edu/?id=0224. Please be aware that changing email addresses can affect many campus and external services.
