We are delighted to welcome and introduce the newest member of the LS IT team, Shannon Hui Ling Chee!
Shannon is joining us this week as a Senior Desktop Support Analyst with primary responsibility for serving Center for Mind and Brain, California Lighting Technology Center, and AUSSC.
Shannon started as a UC Davis student in the pre vet/animal science major but became fascinated with computer science after taking a GE and ended up switching majors. Prior to accepting this new position, Shannon was an IT Lead and Information Security Analyst in the College of Engineering where she handled troubleshooting of software and hardware issues to ensure all systems were operational, improved the efficiency of the college's IT team, and investigated/resolved security incidents.
Shannon is passionate about combining her interests in technology and cybersecurity to make the world a better place—whether that's automating repetitive tasks to allow researchers to focus on their research/save the world or implementing policies and technology to improve the security posture of the organization as a whole in a way that still makes it accessible.
Outside of work, Shannon enjoys playing board games with friends, eating delicious food, taking pictures, and exploring the outdoors with her puppy, Kali. Someday, she would love to travel the world and learn the art of astrophotography.
macOS updates typically include critical patches for zero-day vulnerabilities that are being actively exploited: if you don't keep your macOS up to date, you are putting your data and our campus cyber-safety at risk.
For Mac users, here are the salient points about Nudge:
Nudge will only remind you about minor version updates. For example, you may be prompted to update from macOS 12.6 to 12.6.1, but you will not be prompted about major version upgrades from macOS 12 to macOS 13.
We recommend that you don't defer to the last possible minute to update. Nudge prompts become more frequent as the deadline to update gets closer.
Allow 30 to 60 minutes for the update to complete. Consider starting the update before leaving for lunch or signing off of your computer for the day.
Save any open documents before initiating the update, and, for laptops, ensure that the computer is plugged in.
Quick Updates and Reminders
Two Deadlines for Winter Break
1. For purchases that require a contract or purchase order, the campus Supply Chain Management deadline for submitting purchase requests is 5PM on 12/7. Orders submitted after that date will be held until January 2023. 2. LS IT will defer orders that require shipments received after 12/12 until January 2023. This includes many common orders for computers, printers, and peripherals.
LS IT Holiday Hours
LS IT will have changed or reduced hours on the following days:
Wed 11/23: LS IT will close at 3PM for the Thanksgiving holiday
Fri 12/2: LS IT will close at 11:30AM for our annual end-of-year celebration
Tue 12/27 - 12/29: LS IT personnel will be working remotely and responding on a best effort basis.
Moving from Sophos to Microsoft Defender for Antivirus
LS IT is planning to migrate all managed computers from Sophos Antivirus to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint in early 2023. We will communicate more in the coming months, but we wanted to start socializing the change now.
