Friends of Warren County Park District

2021 GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT RECAP Over the course of last weekend's virtual GBBC, we had dozens of community members, including 35 Kings High School student volunteers log their sightings from home. Together, the students alone identified and tallied 44 unique bird species using Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Merlin Bird ID app and eBird.com! Participants from all around the world contributed important data to scientific research by logging their observatons. Featured above is a Cooper's Hawk that visited Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Dave Woehr's yard during the GBBC this year. Dave observed that there had been 13 cardinals; then there were just 12, and a hawk with a full belly!

SPECIES SPOTLIGHT, MEADOW VOLE Often confused with mice, meadow voles have rounder faces, smaller ears, and much shorter tails. If you find strange tunnels in your yard when the snow starts to melt, meadow voles may be the culprit! Read more about them here.

GARDENERS WANTED! Are you looking forward to warmer spring weather and getting your hands a little dirty? We will need help planting tiny native tree seedlings at the Solar Pollinator Habitat (SPH) at Warren County Armco Park sometime in mid-April. The plants are coming from the Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District's native tree sale (you can order some for your own yard until 3/17, stock is limited). If you are interested in helping plant seedings, would like to help us plan and maintain the SPH area, or just have a general interest in gardening, please contact Cindy Glorius.

Job start dates vary by position. Job Description and applications are available on our park website or in the Warren County Armco Park Office Mon – Fri 10:00 am to 3:00 pm located at 1223 N. SR 741. Lebanon, OH 45036. These positions are subject to a post-offer drug screen and background check (BCI). Warren County Park District is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
