This week's theme is TURTLES! Follow us on Facebook for fun activities related to the weekly theme, and if you are tracking your children's time spent outdoors for the 100-Hours-Outside Challenge, make sure to mark off that you have done a lizard-themed activity to get a bonus entry for the grand prize drawing at the end of summer, a family canoe trip from Loveland Canoe and Kayak! Start this week's challenge by checking out the Ohio Division of Wildlife's Reptiles of Ohio field guide

Also plan on joining us this week at Armco Park when we kick off our Tech-Free Tuesday programs. One of our ODNR registered program animals, Leonard the box turtle will be joining us! Click here for more info. ~Naturalist Shannon
Deerfield Township is calling all creative minds, artists, and those with a big imagination to create miniature homes for these mythical creatures. No experience is required. All skill levels are welcome.

The theme for Landen-Deerfield Park is Holiday Homes. Homes should be placed around the paved path on July 8 and will remain on display until July 15th, when you can remove them. Materials used to create the miniature homes should be appropriate for outdoor use, should fit within a 12" x 12" floor space, and be family friendly. For more information or to see the different themes at each of the featured Deerfield Township parks please visit
Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist Carol Soehner was an important part of our Friends group for many years, and she is greatly missed. Her generous spirit, enthusiasm for the natural world, and positive outlook on life were contagious.

To donate to a memorial fund in Carol's honor, please click here. Funds will be used to purchase a bench that will be installed at one of our Park District properties. If you prefer not to donate by PayPal we will be accepting checks made out to FWCPD with "Carol Soehner memorial" on the memo line. Checks can be mailed to "Friends of WCPD, 1223 State Route 741, Lebanon, OH 45036."

Birds in several states, including Ohio and Kentucky, have been reported showing signs of a new and yet undetermined disease that appears to affect their eyes and neurological systems. Wildlife biologists across several states and organizations are collecting samples to determine what is happening. Until we have more information, they recommend that the public do the following:
  • Cease feeding birds until this wildlife mortality event has concluded;
  • Clean feeders and bird baths with a 10% bleach solution;
  • Avoid handling birds, but wear disposable gloves if handling is necessary; and
  • Keep pets away from sick or dead birds as a standard precaution.

If you encounter sick or dead birds, please file a report at If you must remove dead birds, place them in a sealable plastic bag to dispose with household trash.

As our community outreach programs grow, we are looking for prizes for kids who participate in our summer programs. We would love to help promote your organization through our Tech-Free Tuesdays and 100-Hours Outside Summer Challenge! For the past several years, Blooms and Berries Farm Market has graciously donated "Fall on the Farm" passes to their awesome autumn festival, and Loveland Canoe and Kayak has provided a family canoe trip on the river for our grand prize. We aim for prizes that contribute to our goal of getting kids unplugged and outdoors! If you have a connection with a local business and would like to donate something, please reach out

We were awarded dozens of native plant plugs through Project Wingspan. They were planted on 5/25/21, and we need help watering them daily through mid-July so they become well established! The Solar Pollinator Habitat is located at Warren Co. Armco Park, 1223 St. Rt. 741, Lebanon, OH 45036. Follow signs to the boat dock.
