Preparing for Unpredictable Weather

Don't be caught offguard by the unpredictability of dangerous weather. Know the risks and take action to protect yourself, your family and your property. The time to prepare is now. Gather supplies for your emergency supply kit, make a plan, buy or check your generator, be ready to strengthen your home against storm damage and review insurance coverage, including sump pump and flood insurance!
The following sites are resources for you to keep in mind when preparing for emergency weather situations:

Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA): www.ready.gov
PA Emergency Management Agency's (PEMA): www.readypa.org

If you or someone you know is oxygen dependent, or has a health condition that would require special attention should an extended loss of power occur, please contact your Township emergency coordinator so he/she is aware of your situation.

Pennsylvania Yellow Dot Program

Pennsylvania’s Yellow Dot Program was created to assist citizens in the “golden hour” of emergency care following a traffic accident when they may not be able to communicate their needs themselves. Placing a yellow dot in your vehicle’s rear window alerts first responders to check your glove compartment for vital information to ensure you receive the medical attention you need.

How does it work?
Participants complete a personal information form, which includes the participant’s name, contact information, emergency contact information, medical history and medications, allergies and the participant's doctors’ names. A photo – showing only the participant’s head and shoulders – is then taped to the front of the completed information sheet.

The yellow dot decal provided in the program kit is placed in the lower left corner of the participant’s vehicle’s rear windshield. The decal should be no higher than 3 inches from the bottom of the windshield. This decal alerts first responders that vital information can be found in the vehicle.

Place the completed information sheet, with the attached picture, into the Yellow Dot folder, and then place the folder into the vehicle’s glove box.

To learn more, or request a free kit, visit www.yellowdot.pa.gov
Winter Driving Tips:
From the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation

On average, more than 7,000 Americans die in weather-related wrecks each year on our nation's highways, according to data from the Federal Highway Administration. The FHA defines weather-related crashes as those that occur in adverse weather such as rain, sleet, snow or fog, or on slick pavement.
Preparation is one key to successfully navigating winter roads. Winter weather can bring unexpected conditions, so make sure that both you and your vehicle are ready for ice and snow.
Being prepared means having a winter emergency kit in your vehicle, regular vehicle maintenance, and safe driving habits.
Visit www.justdrivepa.org for information on staying safe on the roads this winter.

Remember, give snowplow drivers plenty of space to avoid being sprayed with anti-skid material that could temporarily impede vision. Drivers also should be careful when passing a plow truck as the plow blade may be wider than the truck. Do not tailgate a plow truck, especially while traveling on hills in hazardous weather. Do not weave in and out of a snow plow train.
