Wishing you a happy Christmas from the NHS Forest

On behalf of the team at the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, we wish all our sites and supporters a very happy Christmas, and we look forward to working with as many of you as possible in 2017.

If you're searching for Christmas ideas, or if you want to acknowledge the care or service you have had through the NHS, you can sponsor a tree at one of our fantastic NHS Forest sites to say thank you and to help make our health service greener and more sustainable.

Mental Health Benefits of Waterways

We're delighted to publish the report from a research study commissioned by the Canal & River Trust, on the mental health benefits of access to the waterway environment. This report reviews the evidence base for a broad spectrum of interventions utilising the canal and river network, across a range of mental health conditions. It builds on a commitment by the Canal & River Trust to make their waterways more inclusive and valuable to people of all walks of life, and we are looking forward to planning the next phase of work with CRT in the New Year.

Transforming Mental Health and Dementia Care with the Natural Environment - Conference

In place of our usual NHS Forest conference, this year we worked on behalf of the National Outdoors for All working Group, to host a conference specifically addressing the question of how we can achieve a step change in the treatment of mental illness and dementia using outdoor interventions. We are expecting the report from the event in the New Year, but in the mean time there is a short report on the event, and all the presentations used, available here.

Mental Health, Dementia and Heritage

The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare was delighted to support the Heritage Lottery Fund at an Inclusive Heritage seminar on World Mental Health Day. The Inclusive Heritage seminar is an annual event led by HLF which promotes best inclusive practice and critical thinking. HLF is committed to building ambition and knowledge in in inclusion across the heritage sector, and welcomes input to the online community discussion.

Bonus Christmas Links!

Because we're so brimming with festive cheer just now! Our friends at the Charter for Trees, Woods and People have posted a lovely blog on wild Christmas tree decorations, and there's also the ongoing Woodland Trust Christmas card recycling programme, which has funded the planting of nearly a quarter of a million trees over its 19 year life.

Site of the Month

University Hospital Coventry has been at the forefront of the NHS Forest since our pilot days in 2009, and has consistently set a high bar in terms of their approach to green space and biodiversity. Exciting times are ahead for the Coventry site, with an outdoor gym area on the drawing board, and further work planned for next year promoting active travel routes, and greater use of the green space for staff, patient, and community wellbeing.

Site Survey

We are still seeking feedback from NHS Forest sites on their experience of being part of the Forest network and how we should continue supporting sites into the future. If you're a Forest site and haven't already filled in our survey we'd be really grateful if you could take five minutes to give us your important feedback.
