Welcome                                                                          Edition 2 - 9/3/2015

Welcome to another edition of Croc Tales, albeit a couple of days late.  As always a lot has been going on, so when you get the chance, sit back and enjoy the read - unless of course you are a player and then it's time to get down to training.

The juniors started back at training last week - welcome back, and a special welcome to all new families. We hope you and your young player/s have a fun, enjoyable and rewarding season! We have all coaches junior back on deck this week, so if you haven't made it to training yet, now is the time to do so.

This coming Saturday sees our first home game for the season, when the seniors take on the Dragons in the qualifying round of the Pre-Season Cup. Lets make it a good start to the season.  Supporters are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

2015 Seniors Pre-Season Camp

Last weekend was a bumper weekend of rugby for the Crocs with our second annual senior pre-season camp.  Like last year, the Wanderers Rugby Club in  Newcastle were very generous in assisting the club host this camp, by supplying access to two of their senior coaches. This year’s guest coaches were Roman Brady, current club head coach and Viv Paasi, current A Grade coach at Wanderers.

The camp started on Friday night with senior and under 17 players being put through a very physical session focusing on defense and the breakdown. This was followed by session in the clubhouse, Saturday afternoon saw more work on the break down, plus other skill sessions.

We sincerely thank Roman, Viv and the Wanderers Rugby Club for their support of the Palmerston Crocs Pre-Season Camp.  The professionalism and commitment of Roman and Viv were outstanding and it was a real privilege for our players to train with coaches of their calibre.
Seniors update - from Stan Carnes, A Grade Coach

Last month saw one of our stalwart players Jay Taaealammo aka Jay John Jack leave Darwin to commence university studies down south. On behalf of everyone in the Crocs playing group I’d like to wish him the best.

Congratulations to everyone who has recently attended training and also the Camp. The intensity of everyone at the camp; and our attitude was outstanding ! Thanks to President Ben for the work behind the scenes in co-ordinating this in what has become a fixture of our calendar each year and to Pebbles and Brock for introducing the guys to Bogarts after the camp.  It’s these sort of events which makes the Crocs a great place to be as we move towards providing the best rugby environment for players in the Territory on and off the field.

You will all be pleased to know that pre-season is now coming to an end and the first of the trials are now approaching us rapidly, so we will now focus from doing a lot of fitness to now doing some fitness and more technique work.  So with more contact work now planned for training, if you don't have a mouthguard you should start getting one made. Junior Sign-On and Come-n-Try Day

Our junior sign-on was held on Saturday morning and we tried something new this year, by including field sessions for the kids as part of the morning activities. The first session (top row of photos) saw U5s, U7s and U9s take the field with their club coaches for some games and fun activities. The second session (second row of photos) was run by Viv from Wanderers and was for the U11s, U13s and U15s.  They enjoyed a different type of warm-up game and other fun activities.  A sausage sizzle was also held in the clubhouse for all players and the families. All in all the day was a success with strong numbers in the younger age groups signing on.

If you haven't signed-on yet that's okay - the junior competition kicks off on Friday 10 April and new and returning registrations will be accepted over coming weeks. The clubhouse is open from 5pm for registrations, payments and collection of socks and shorts (and training singlets when they arrive).

Pathways to Gold squad training at Palmerston

On Saturday last weekend the club hosted the Under 14 Pathways to Gold Squad out at Moulden Oval, where they were put through their paces by Roman and Viv. Despite it being very hot the boys trained for a solid hour and half, honing their skills with passing drills, defensive drills, ruck and maul work and various other game situations.

Afterwards the boys enjoyed a BBQ in the clubhouse and the opportunity to chill out with their mates for a while. They all got something out of the training session, as did Wayne and Robbie (Junior Gold coaches) who enjoyed the opportunity to work with professional coaches.
Junior Handbook

Junior Handbook

We only printed up a limited number of Junior Handbooks (saving trees!), however we encourage all junior families to flick through the Junior Handbook as it covers the A -  Z of the junior competition. If you have any questions, just ask your coach or ask in the clubhouse. Click here or the handbook image on the left to go to the Junior Handbook.

The Graham family will be holding a Tribute Memorial Service on Sunday 22 March to commemorate the life of Adrian 'Slugger’ Graham. This service will take place at Western Suburbs League Club, Leumeah, Campbelltown and all who knew Adrian are invited to attend.  For details, click here.

Greg Jarvis held this position last year but has stepped down for family reasons, so we urgently require someone to put their hand up for this position. Perhaps you’re a past player, a former coach or a club supporter… if you believe you have the skills and knowledge to take on this role we need to hear from you! Contact Ben on 0417 082 531 if you are interested. Support and training is available for this role.

The NTRU together with the ARU will be running coaching and refereeing courses from the 21 – 24 March.  It’s the aim of the club to have all coaches properly accredited and so will cover all course fees.  Note that all coaches from Under 9s and above will need to complete the Smart Rugby (Foundation) Course to satisfy ARU insurance requirements.  Please nominate for these courses by emailing  Further details are available here.

We have our first home game this weekend. There’s a lot of work involved in running a home game – if you are available to help out, whether for half an hour or the whole afternoon, please let us know. Text Ben on 0417 082 531.

Junior players are ALWAYS growing out of their boots!  Do you have a pair of boots that are in good condition but are no longer required? The Great Boot Exchange is on again - either donate your old boots at the clubhouse, exchange them for another pair or pick up a pair of boots that have been generously donated for re-use

Senior subs are now due

Senior subs are now due. Note that in 2015 the Australian Rugby Union has introduced a Players Participation Levy and have also changed the way that playing insurance must be paid: players insurance must now be paid by the player rather than the club. To be covered by insurance, both the participation levy and insurance levy must prior to playing.
Click here or on the flyer on the left for full details on subs payable.

Defence Expo

'Welcome to Darwin' Defence Expo

Palmerston Crocs had a display at the 'Welcome to Darwin' Defence Expo held at the Darwin Convention Centre on Saturday 7 March. This was a good opportunity to raise our profile in the community and to hopefully recruit a player or two or three.  Many thanks to Drew, Eddie, Percy, Stan, Rob and Ben who manned the display.

Coaches attending coaching courses

Kevin Humphreys (U7s coach) and Cody Akers (U5s coach) have been busy in the lead up to the 2015 season.  Kevin recently completed the Community Coaching General Principles course run by the Australian Sports Commission as well as two 'Play by the Rules' courses about making sport inclusive, safe and fair.  Cody attended the Higher Faster Stronger Coaching Forum run by the NT Department of Sport and Recreation.

Both Kevin and Cody undertook these courses on their own initiative and are to be commended on their commitment to their coaching. Well done Kevin and Cody!

Junior gallery on the club website

In addition to the senior gallery on the club website (with team photos dating back to 1978) we now also have a junior gallery.  There are some old photos that we’re unsure of the team and/or year - we've posted them in a Facebook album and if you have any details, just let us know.  And if you have any other team photos - junior or senior - that you're happy to share, there would be a lot of past players out there who would love to see them!

The team photo above is of the Under 10s in 1992.  Does anyone recognise the young junior circled? Have a guess, and we'll let you know in the next edition of Croc Tales!

The Palmerston Crocs would not survive without the valued support of our generous sponsors. Please support these sponsors where possible - for more information about each business, just click on their logo below.
