Croc Tales

Edition 1 - 19/1/2015

Welcome to another season of rugby and to the first edition of Croc Tales for the year!

The off-season flew by, the Hottest 7s has come and gone and now the seniors are well into their pre-season training.  However we're starting the year in a strange place because, as many of you will know, the club has been rocked by the sad news of the passing of Adrian 'Slugger’ Graham who was a very good friend of many of our senior and past players and supporters. Our thoughts are with Adrian's family and friends at this time.

Looking ahead, we have the Seniors and Under 17s Pre-Season camp planned for the weekend of Friday 27 February - Sunday 1 March. It promises to be a great weekend and we hope to see as many players there as possible.

We're also looking forward to welcoming our juniors back soon - we have our junior sign-on day next Saturday 28 February and it should be an enjoyable morning with come-and-try activities on the field for the kids. More details below.

Adrian 'Slugger' Graham

Adrian 'Slugger' Graham

27 December 1978 - 8 February 2015

Adrian 'Slugger' Graham was a champion bloke and a popular member of both the Palmerston Crocs and South Darwin rugby union clubs.  Slugger played just under 100 A Grade games for the Crocs in the early 2000s, including playing in the 2002 premiership, before moving across to Souths where his brother Ashley was playing.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Rest in Peace Slugger.

Seniors Update - Stan Carnes, A Grade Coach

Welcome back to Season 2015.
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Hottest 7s and thanks to those who came down and supported the boys. We have made a lot of ground towards ensuring that all of our players represent the Crocs and will further develop our 7s program for next year to ensure that all Crocs stay in the nest. Thanks to the Committee for the work on providing our team kit and also to Drew, Riva, Dennis, Fiona, Cecily and Jamie for their support during the day.  It was also great to see the guys in the 10s reach the finals as well.  The Crocs were one of the few Clubs to have teams in all competitions (Seniors, Tens and Under 18s) and this is a great achievement for the Club.
Pre-season started three weeks ago, and all the senior squad players have been working extremely hard despite the weather and have been leaving nothing in the tank.  Numbers have been around 20 at each training session, however it’s now time to re-commit if you want to play in Season 2015.  Everyone knows that pre-season isn’t fun, however being injured is even less fun so I’d encourage all players to come down to training and start preparing now; even if this means training once a week around work schedules, family commitments and so on. Ultimately, the only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary!
See you on the training track,

Do you love your rugby and would like to become more involved? We require coaches for the upcoming season as follows:
  • Reserve Grade coach - urgently required
  • Additional junior coaches - Under 7s, Under 9s and Under 13s
Contact Ben on 0417 082 531 if you are interested. Support and training is available for these roles. Junior coaches are required to obtain an Ochre Card.

Our first Bunnings BBQ for this season is on the Sunday 22 February.  At the time of printing we still require:
  • 8am to 10am (1 more person)
  • 10am to 12pm (1 more person)
  • 12pm to 2pm (n/a - a full shift!)
  • 2pm to 4pm (1 more person)
Bunnings BBQs are a major fundraiser for the club and it’s important that we do them well.   It’s a short 2 hours and the time flies by - please let us know if you’re available by emailing or contacting Ben on 0417 082 531. Thanks in advance!

The NTRU together with the ARU will be running coaching and refereeing courses from the 21 – 24 March.  It’s the aim of the club to have all coaches properly accredited and so will cover all course fees.  Note that all coaches from Under 9s and above will need to complete the Smart Rugby (Foundation) Course to satisfy ARU insurance requirements.  Please nominate for these courses by emailing  Further details are available HERE
What’s new in 2015

After a number of years of successful fundraising efforts by club members, we have this year taken the big step of engaging expert services to support our volunteer coaches and players throughout the season. These are detailed below.  Put simply, we want to make Palmerston Rugby Union Club the best rugby union club in the Territory!

Players, you can show your support of these initiatives by getting to training, recruiting your mates to play for the club and paying your subs.
senior training

Darwin Academy of Sport

The club has engaged the services of the Darwin Academy of Sport to run our strength and conditioning training for 2015. They will provide the basis of our pre-season training, as well as work with both the senior and under 17 squads in maintaining season long fitness, injury recovery sessions and whole-of-club warm up and cool down routines.
Optimus Health

The club is also in the process of obtaining the services of Optimus Health.  Optimus Health will provide a qualified physiotherapist for game day and Tuesday training sessions. This will enable professional strapping for the seniors, expert injury diagnosis on Saturdays and injury management for the whole club (both juniors and seniors) at training on Tuesdays. Discounts will also be available for follow up physiotherapist sessions.
Hottest 7s
Joshua Meads
Josh Meads

Our 2015 guest player for the Hottest 7s weekend was Josh Meads (pictured above with the ball). Josh was a valued addition to the Palmerston Crocs Senior 7s Squad and he certainly fitted in well with our boys both on and off the field.  Josh has just been selected in the Melbourne Rebels 7s squad to contest the ARU National Rugby Sevens Championship being held in Sydney from 6-8 March. Congratulations Josh!
ARU Youth National Rugby Sevens Championships

We also congratulate Palmerston Crocs player Abel Shirley who was named in the NT Youth Boys 7s team for the ARU Youth National Rugby Sevens Championships, along with Darren Caulton (reserve). And a special mention to senior player Gareth Felton's daughter Brielle, who was named as vice captain for the NT Youth Girls 7s team. Well done!
