Welcome

Welcome all to another edition of Croc Tales. As usual, I will say it has been another busy fortnight - you'll see why as you read below everything our club members have been up to off-field.  On-field, the seniors have been training hard with good numbers at training despite some very monsoonal conditions.  The club also has exciting news for our seniors that will help kick-start our season - read about it in the senior update following.

But as busy as the last fortnight has been, it's only going to get busier: the juniors have their sign on day this Saturday 22 February and will soon be training, and the seniors pre-season cup kicks off in a couple of weeks, with a home game at Moulden Oval on Saturday 8 March.  Our season launch will held on Friday 21 March and the following weekend will see the 2014 season underway for both juniors and seniors at Rugby Park. So it's full steam ahead for 2014!

Seniors: Pre-season training camp

The club is organising a pre-season training camp for all senior players, to be held from Friday 28 February to Saturday 1 March. The club has been privileged to secure ex-Waratahs and ex-Bulls attack coach Todd Louden to host the camp. Todd will be supported by forwards coach Ben Roberts and high performance analyst Declan Oorloff.  All senior players are very strongly urged to commit to this possibly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be coached by a Super 15 coach. If Under 17 players are interested in attending the camp they will need to train with the seniors on 25 & 27 February and register their interest with either Rhys Hitchcock or Kerry Smith. Junior coaches and other club members are also welcome to come down and watch these professional coaches in action.

Juniors: Sign-on and season start

The junior sign-on day is on this Saturday 22 February between 10am and 1pm at the clubhouse. All welcome!! Start times/dates for junior training will be confirmed at the sign-on day.  Junior games will start on Friday 28 March with game times as follows:

  • U11 @ 6.50pm
  • U13 @ 7.50pm

NT PATHWAY TO GOLD PROGRAM

The NTRU will be holding a testing day for the Junior Gold Program on Sunday 16 March. The day is open to players born in 1999, 2000 and 2001 and is the first step in a program designed to take players through to national competition level in 2016. Further details are included in this flyer and program outline.

2014 KERR-BARLOW SCHOLARSHIPS

Applications for the 2014 Kerr-Barlow Scholarships are now open. These club scholarships are to designed to encourage and support emerging players in their rugby development. To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must either be a current Under 17 player or in their first year of senior rugby, having played junior rugby in 2013.  Scholarship holders will be announced at our season launch on Friday 21 March. Full details and an application form can be found here.

CROC TALES
We think we've sorted through the inevitable teething problems of our first online Croc Tales (just let us know if we haven't!). If for some reason you missed last fortnight's Croc Tales, it can now be found on our website, along with editions dating back to 2000.
Working bee

Clubhouse Working Bee

Sunday 9 February saw a very small band of dedicated volunteers attend the clubhouse working bee. It's amazing what can get done and a special thanks should go to Paul Theyers and his son Mitchell who brought their painting skills along. The kitchen received its final coat of paint and the verandah roof got a much needed re-paint.  Thanks to Paul and Mitchell and the others who were there - you know who you are.

Defence Expo

Defence Welcome to the Top End Expo

Saturday 15 February saw the club share a display with the netball club at the Defence Welcome to the Top End Expo. This year the expo was held at the Turf Club rather than the Palmerston YMCA where it has been previously held and as such numbers for defence families living in Palmerston may have been slightly down; however interest, particularly for our juniors, was again strong.

On the Airwaves - 105.7 ABC Darwin

Also on Saturday 15 February, listeners to ABC Radio's Territory Grandstand program would have heard Palmerston Rugby mentioned over the airwaves, when Charlie King spoke with Ben Blyton about the upcoming season.

Bunnings BBQ # 1

The club held its first of five Bunnings BBQs for the year on Sunday 16 February. These BBQs are an important part of our fundraising activities and this week we raised approximately $1250.  The club sincerely thanks the following volunteers for their time:

1st shift: Dennis Grant, Ned Kelly, Lara O'Connor, Sara O'Connor, Rob Sloan
2nd shift: Peter Hakes, Aaron Hakes, Bayley Hakes, Connor Hakes
3rd shift: Ryan Cotton, Ash Cunningham, Brock Evans, Jordan Simshauser
4th shift: Ben Blyton, Jacob Blyton, Gareth Felton, Garry Russell

In other Bunnings BBQ news, we've had our first volunteer for our BBQs on the 13 April and 17 August: the Member for Drysdale Ms Lia Finocchiaro has very kindly offered to assist the club by doing a shift at each of these BBQs. Could this be the start of our TV series, Celebrity BBQ Chefs?

We have been pleased with the numbers that have shown up for try outs and training.  This season will see us field 6 teams, ranging from A and A Reserve, to Division 1 to Division 4, with upwards of 70 players coming to try outs and training we are aiming to be highly competitive in all grades. Read more...

Will Taylor

Will Taylor

Congratulations to Rob and Bec Taylor on the arrival of their son Will Garry Taylor on the 13 February. Rob and Bec are active long term members of the club, particularly with the juniors and in recent years Robbie has also been honing his skills as a referee. We don't think it will be long until little Will is strapping on his boots for a run on the field with his Dad.

Then and now...

Last week the clubhouse veranda got a lick of paint as we get ready for this year's season. Cast your eyes back to how the clubhouse used to look when it was first opened in the early '90s. It must have been an age of innocence - no fence, no security screening and peaked tennis caps.

Tsunami

The club is into its second year of a product sponsorship deal with Tsunami Sports Ltd. Tsunami supply sportswear to over 5000 clubs and schools in more than 40 countries. It is through this sponsorship deal that we have been able to offer our distinctive Rugby 7s kit to our Hottest 7s team for the past two years. The club met with Nick Bell, Tsunami's representative, during the recent Hottest 7s and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Tsunami for many years to come.

In appreciation of all our valuable sponsors:

Palmerston Rugby Union Club is a grassroots rugby club, proudly run 100% by dedicated volunteers.
