Croc Tales

Proudly celebrating our 40th anniversary in 2016

Welcome                                                                           Edition 1 - 23/2/16

Welcome to the first edition of Croc Tales for 2016.  We've had a big off-season, however the biggest news that the club has had in quite some time is that we have secured the services of Ravin Du Plessis as our new head coach. We welcome Ravin, review the off-season and look ahead to Season 2016 in this edition of Croc Tales.

It's shaping up to be a big season for the Crocs this year as we celebrate our 40th anniversary.  To all our players, supporters, sponsors and valued club members near and far - here's to a big year both on and off the rugby field in 2016.

Ben Blyton
Club President

Keeping in the loop...

Welcome Ravin and Jan-Marie Du Plessis!

The Palmerston Crocs extend a very warm welcome to our new Head Coach and A Grade Coach Ravin du Plessis and his wife Jan-Marie.  Ravin and Jan-Marie have recently arrived in Darwin from Dubai and are looking forward to settling into life in the Top End.

Ravin has an outstanding coaching background, having previously had assistant coaching roles at 3 x Super 14 sides, plus elite coaching roles in South Africa, New Zealand, Dubai and more recently as the national coach of Sri Lanka.

Ravin is now keen to put back into rugby at the grassroots level and as a local rugby club, we are exceptionally privileged to have a coach of Ravin’s calibre working with us. Thankyou Ravin and Jan-Marie, and welcome to the Palmerston Crocs!
Senior Volunteers

Welcome back to Tommy Hurse who has signed on as A Grade Manager and Senior Registrar for the season.  Tommy has hit the ground running and will not doubt be a major asset as the season unfolds.

The women’s team coordinators, Alan Babbs and Drew Weaver, are continuing their work from the off-season with the women’s team. The women have had strong performances in both the Summer of 7s and the Hottest 7s and we are hopeful of having a 10s or 15s women's side this year.
2016 Pre-Season Cup

The Pre-Season Cup kicks off on Saturday 5 March, with the Palmerston Crocs hosting their first home game of 2014 against the Darwin Dragons. The Cup this year will see the Crocs play three games and we are looking forward to supporting our seniors as they look to make their mark on Season 2016.
Hottest 7s in the World
Hottest 7s Mens
The club's first outing for 2016 was the Hottest 7s and this year we entered a men's side, women’s side and a side in the Territory Tens Tournament.  Results for the weekend were, to be honest, mixed.

The men’s side are probably still wondering what went wrong.  In the pool games we lost to Burnside in a game we should have won; Burnside then went on to win the Barra final.  In the quarter finals of the Gecko competition we lost to East Arnhem in extra time; East Arnhem then went on to win the Gecko final. In all games we were in positions to win but mistakes and poor options cost us the results we were after.

The women’s side competed well in a competition that is getting stronger every year, with Australian representative players included in the top teams. The women had fun and put in strong performances throughout the weekend.  The highlight was their exciting win in their last game against the Alice Springs Royals. Well done!!

The Territory Tens side again did us proud and won their tournament on the Saturday after a fiery game against Katherine Pirates in the final.  Well done boys and it was great to see many of you back on the Sunday to support both 7's sides.

We didn't enter a team in the Under 18s boys, but four Palmerston juniors acquitted themselves well playing for the Cragons United (a combined Casurina / Dragons / University - and Palmerston! - team).

Hottest 7s Volunteers

A special mention to all our club members who volunteered to help the NTRU run the Hottest 7s. In fact, we thought the NTRU volunteer shirt could well of been our away strip as there were so many volunteers over the weekend who were connected with our club. Well done to all that gave up their time on the weekend!
Ball Kids
Hottest 7s Balls Kids

A special mention also to all our juniors who did a fantastic job as ball kids over the weekend, and a big congratulations to Palmerston Crocs Junior Jet Holt who won the Ball Kid of the Tournament Award.

The Palmerston Stand

The revamped Palmerston Stand was definitely the place to be on the Hottest 7s weekend. The ice baths meant that most teams made their way through the stand over the weekend, including the Gumatji Warriors and their star recruit, former Wallaby Ridike Samo.
Women's 15s Rugby

After successful performances in both the Summer of Sevens and the Hottest 7s, the women's team are keen to play 15s or 10s rugby if need be. They're keen for a few players, so if you would like to give it a go, please call Chloe or Bec on the numbers shown left.
Come along ton Saturday 5 March to sign up for another fantastic season with an amazing club!

There will a sausage sizzle for hungry tummies and our Under 15 Coach Tony Rudd is happy to organise some games of touch/tackle on the field for the kids who can't wait to get back into rugby! More details on this will follow.

After the sign-up, you're welcome to head over to the field to watch the seniors play their first game of 15s for the season, in the Pre-Season Cup against Darwin Dragons.
Love your rugby and would like to become more involved? We are looking for applicants to fill the following roles:
  • Reserve Grade Coach
  • Reserve Grade Manager
  • Sports Trainer (to support our current Sports Trainer)
  • Junior Coaches and Managers (a limited number are unfilled)
Support and training is available for these roles. All coaches and managers who work with children are required to obtain an Ochre Card. Contact Ben on 0417 082 531 if you are interested.

Our first Bunnings BBQ for the year is on Sunday 28th February. Bunnings BBQs are a significant part of our club fundraising and your support is invaluable. Please advise Dennis on 0437 912 140 if you're able to assist.

We have a small number of this year's Palmerston Crocs Hottest 7s singlets available for sale. These are a once-off item so get in quick before they are all gone. They're available at the clubhouse for $35 each.

We also have left-over stock last year's Cambodia 10s tour. Again, this is available at the clubhouse or see Drew at training for details.
40th Anniversary Season

Rugby Union in the Territory kicked off in 1976 and the Palmerston Crocs were there! We'll be celebrating our 40th anniversary this year, as will the other founding clubs. A highlight of out 40th season will be a big reunion which will be held over the June long weekend. There will be a range of activities, culminating in a reunion dinner on Saturday 12 June. Save the dates!

Social Sub-Committee

We're celebrating the Club's 40th birthday and we want to make it a great one! We want to build on events such as ladies day, nights at the clubhouse and junior activities. We are planning to hold events that get players, partners, families and the local rugby community involved. If you're interested in being a part of the club's social committee this year, please email:
Off Season Major Projects
Moulden Oval
Palmy Stand 1
Palmy Stand 2
Moulden Oval

For those who have not been down to Moulden Oval for a while - the hill has gone and the oval has been fenced!  The oval is much more visible from the road and with no vehicle access, the frequent vandalism that occurred on the oval has been reduced.

This was a joint project between Moulden Park School, the Department of Sport and Recreation and the Palmerston Crocs, and we extend our appreciation to both the school and the department for getting involved in this project.

Palmerston Stand at Rugby Park

The redevelopment of the shade structure at Rugby Park is 95% complete. The area under shade has been increased considerably, the roof has been completely replaced, there's a new slab of concrete and we have a brand new deck out the front so that you can actually see the whole field! The signs will be replaced soon and some other minor work will be done prior to the start of the season. Without doubt this redevelopment will not only greatly benefit our supporters, but also supporters from other clubs who utilise the space. We think it is definitely the best place to watch rugby in Rugby Park!

Again we need to thank the Department of Sport and Recreation for providing a sizable grant to assist with these works.  The club matched this grant with club funds, so a big thankyou to everyone who has assisted in our fund raising in some way over the last few years. This is an amazing example of where your money could go!

In Appreciation

The club was happy to provide sponsorship support for the 2015 Palmerston Shopping Centre Variety Special Children's Christmas Party held in December last year. The Christmas Party is an annual event held for children from challenging circumstances in the local area. It is sponsored by local businesses and other in the local area.
Australia Day
2016 Australia Day Awards

The Palmerston Crocs were well represented at the recent Ausralia Day City of Palmerston Official Ceremony, having received Australia Day Award nominations in two categories – citizen and community event of the year. The awards recognise the contributions made to the local community by residents and community organisations, and we were proud to have been nominated. Well done Crocs!
Old Salties

The Old Salties - the Palmerston Crocs Over 35s - have dusted off the old books in readiness for playing in the Darwin Rugby 10s Tournament being held at Little Mindl on the Saturday 12 March.
The tournament is run by Friends of Rugby and promises to be a great weekend.  The players will be wearing one-off jerseys based on the design of the jerseys worn by the Palmerston Crocs from them mid-1980s through to the mid-1990s. Check out this album of A, B and C Grade teams from this era, available here.
