Welcome

Welcome to the first edition of Croc Tales for the 2014 season.  Firstly, we welcome all our new sponsors on board and say thank you to our returning ones. It's shaping up to be an exciting season.

On-field, senior training is now underway. We're hoping for big contributions this year from some of our younger players, after their solid performances in the recent Hottest 7s. The juniors kick off at the end of the month, with their sign-on day on the 22nd.  Off-field, we have all but completed some major developments which will open up new opportunities as the season progresses. Read about these and more in the club news below.

Finally, you will have noticed that Croc Tales is looking somewhat different.  We're keeping with the times and have moved to an online version, essentially to save time for our hard working Croc Tales team of Wendy Leach and Selina Blyton. As with anything new there may be a few initial teething problems to sort out; however we hope that you will continue to enjoy the club's fortnightly newsletter.

Hottest 7s in the World

The Palmerston Crocs have recently competed in the Hottest 7s Tournament held over the Australia Day weekend.  We again had a dedicated 7’s strip for the players and in another first, we organised a guest player to play for Palmerston over the weekend. Thank you Graham Harkness from Singapore!

Day 1 saw wins against the Moree Bulls (seed no 1 in our pool) and the Kununurra Mud Crabs and a loss to Casuarina Cougars.  We finished 2nd in our pool and progressed to the Barra round.  Day 2 games were all knock out and our first game for the day was against an invitation side called MUA Strait Magic. Unfortunately we lost in a game that had its own controversy in regards to the opposition's run on side, which looked rather different from their side that played on Saturday - although maybe that was the magic?

Although disappointed to go out in the way we did,  the club was very happy with the result. It’s the first time in a number of years that we have made Barra round. Furthermore, the team was certainly one of the youngest going around, with two 17 year olds, four 18 year olds and two 19 year olds making up the bulk of the team.  The number of young players in the side and the way they performed should give them confidence for the season ahead.  Best players of the weekend included Greg Svanfelds, Michael Killiner, Tyrone Gersch-Mizen and Keeden Steen.

Hottest 7s
A special thank you to our fantastic Juniors who were kept very busy as ball kids over the weekend: Jack & Daniel Akers, Jacob, Alexandra & Connor Blyton, Sachin Deo and Ayden Whitehouse (some pictured below left at the final presentation).  A special mention to Alexandra Blyton (pictured right) who was voted best ball kid of the tournament by the referees.

Seniors update

The club is pleased to announce that Rhys Hitchcock (pictured left) will be the 2014 A Grade coach.  Rhys comes with a wealth of experience, having played rugby both here in Australia and overseas.  Senior training has started and we've had good numbers so far; however if you haven't been down yet now is the time to do so.  We need to put the work in now, so that results on the field can follow.  The 2014 Pre-Season Cup starts on 8 March and the season starts on 29 March.

Clubhouse kitchen update

The kitchen redevelopment is going well with just a few final touches required to complete the project.  It's looking great and is sure to prove invaluable over the coming season.  Thanks again to the Department of Sport, Recreation and Racing and to the Palmerston City Council for providing grant funding to assist with this project.

Bunnings BBQ

Bunnings BBQs

This year, the club is booked to do the Bunnings BBQs on the following Sundays: 16th February, 13th April, 29th June, 17th August and 12th October.  There are 4 shifts per BBQ (8-10am, 10am-12pm, 12-2pm and 2-4pm) and 4 people are required for each shift.  These are a very important part of the clubs fundraising, so consider helping out for a shift or two over the year. It will be much appreciated.

Palmerston Crocs Netball

In other off-season news, the former Palmerston Magpies Netball Club has now come under the umbrella of Palmerston Rugby Union Club.  While remaining two separate clubs for all practical purposes, the rugby club has supplied the netballers with training shirts for all players and the netballers will in turn increase our social membership by over 70 members.  Although in its infancy, it is hoped the arrangement will benefit both clubs in the long term.  We welcome the netballers on board.
Nathan Sharp

Wallaby Legend Nathan Sharpe

Palmerston Crocs Juniors at the recent Hottest 7s were very excited to meet former Wallabies Captain, Queensland Reds and Western Force veteran, Nathan Sharpe.  Nathan has recently been appointed as an Ambassador to the NTRU and is expected to be a regular visitor to the Territory over the next few years.

Croc Tales through the decades...

Croc Tales has been going strong for decades.  Here's a random selection of Croc Tales banners, from the typewriter eras of the 1970s and '80s to the continually evolving computer eras of late '90s onwards.
