Welcome                                                                           Edition 4 - 16/7/16

With so much on this year Croc Tales has been very sporadic, but a lot has happened over recent months including the successful reunion weekend, strong performances by the seniors on the field and recent NT junior representative tours, so another edition is well and truly overdue.

I hope you enjoy this weekend edition of Croc Tales.

Club President

A Strong Senior Season
A Grade
A Grade
A Grade
This year sees both men’s sides performing well – B Grade is still undefeated and has the minor premiership secured while A Grade is currently sitting 3rd, with two games to go until the finals. If results go our way then we could finish as high as second and secure the double chance. However with just two rounds of the season remaining, the make-up of the finals is still anyone's guess. Check out the ladders and games statistics below for just how close the season has been.

The solid senior results to date are on the back of consistent numbers at training and general growth in registered players for the club. The NTRU supplied club's with registration statistics which show Palmerston is the club with the most registered senior players in the Territory, and one of only a few clubs with positive growth for this year. I believe that these results are due to the club successfully gaining the services of Head Coach Ravin Du Plessis who is to be congratulated on the work he has done across the senior grades. Ravin has been well supported by a number of support staff including Tommy Hurse as A Grade Manager, Shane Cotton as B Grade Coach and a host of other people who have all contributed to a much better performance by the seniors this year.

The strength of our junior program can also be seen in the number of ex-juniors we have playing in the seniors - this year's A Grade squad includes six former Palmerston juniors.

The Women's team has had a consistent season in their inaugural year and with Women's/Girls co-ordinator Chloe Dray, coach Alan Babbs and a number of key players continuing to drive things forward, they are building the foundations for what will hopefully be a continuing women's competition in the year's to come.

Senior Presentation Night...

... will be held on Saturday 20 August @ Cazalys. Full details out soon!
NT Junior Representative Tours
NT U14s and U16s
Palmerston Crocs at the Queensland Rugby Junior State Championships
While the juniors have been on their school holiday break, some of older juniors have been interstate with NT junior representative teams. The NT Under 14s and NT Under 16s participated in the Queensland Rugby Junior State Championships on the Gold Coast while the NT Schoolboys (Under 18s) competed in the Australian Schoolboy Championships in NSW.

The Palmerston Crocs were well represented across all three teams:

NT Schoolboys: Liam Bilston, Jimi Fitzgerald, Elijah Simpson, Callum Killian, Jonathan Briskin and Jett Norris, and Ravin du Plessis (coach - pre tour).

NT Under 16s: Jack Deane, Jarryd Gardiner, Jai Hamilton and Lucas Munnich.

NT Under 14s: Jack Akers, Jacob Blyton, Jack Briskin, Jackson Calder, Blake Gabbert, Aidan Holt, Jayden Humphreys, Kenny O’Connor, Ryan Otto, Darcy Simpson, and Eddie Weaver, and Robbie Taylor (coach) and Fiona Weaver (sports trainer).

As further indication of the strength of our junior program, Palmerston players were named in leadership positions for all three teams:

NT Schoolboys Captain: Liam Bilston
NT Schoolboys Vice Captain: Jimi Fitzgerald
NT Under 16s Captain: Jai Hamilton
NT Under 14s Captains: Jacob Blyton and Ryan Otto

Congratulations also to Liam Bilston, Jimi Fitzgerald and Jett Norris on being named in the Australian Schools Rugby Division 2 Merit Squad. In the NT Under 14 side, well done to Jacob Blyton for being named Player of the Tournament, Eddie Weaver for being awarded Best Back and Jack Akers for Most Improved.

Well done to all who toured - players, coaches and managers.  It is a privilege to represent the Territory and the memories made will last a lifetime.
Road to Rio
Australian 7s - Road to Rio

Closer to home, several of our younger juniors took the opportunity to watch the Australian 7s teams train at Rugby Park in preparation for the Rio Olympic Games. It was a fantastic experience to observe the commitment and organisation of the players and staff at this level of competition.

Reminders...

  • Junior training resumes on Tuesday 19 July 2016
  • Round 14 games will be played on Thursday 21 July 2016
40th Anniversary Weekend, Friday 10 - Sunday 12 June 2016
40th collage
40th Anniversary Dinner - Sunday 12 June 2016
The 40th Anniversary Weekend was a big weekend for the club. The Golf Day on the Friday was well attended and the Saturday saw an Old Salties game at Moulden Oval followed by good numbers back at the clubhouse for a BBQ.

The gala dinner was held on the Sunday with approximately 130 people attending. A highlight for many was to catch up with the people who had travelled from afar to make the night special. These included Tony Morris (Brisbane), Pat Aratema (NZ), Jeremy Bree (Melbourne), Ben Emmett (Maitland), Jeff Bennett (Brisbane), Greg and Tim Warneke (Adelaide), Colin and Alison SnowdenJason Randall and Greg Girle (Gove) to name a few. A number of past players from across the decades spoke on the night, with the common theme being the mateship and the good times that we have all had with the club over many years. Another highlight was the number of current players who attended the celebrations and hopefully who will continue the traditions in the years to come.

An important part of the night was the awarding of life memberships to Selina Blyton, Alison Snowden, Dennis Grant and Percy Peel for their service to the club over many years. Well done to all.

Also important was the induction into the Hall of Fame of another five past players who have made a major contribution to the game of rugby in the Territory.  Consideration is given to both a players’ on-field statistical achievements, as well as their sportsmanship, commitment, character and personal contribution to their team and the game of rugby in their era. This year's inductees were: Jon Burgess, Colin Snowden, Craig Leach, Gail Barlow and Ben Blyton. Congratulations!

On a final note, thank you to those who were involved in the organisation of the weekend's activities, including Bryony Bree, Mima Pope-Brien, Michael Killiner, Dennis Grant and Brock Evans, and to everyone else - too many to mention - who in some way contributed to the success of the weekend.

Life Members

Life Member Wendy Leach (who announced the life memberships) with new life members Dennis Grant, Alison Snowden, Selina Blyton and Percy Peel, and Life Member Dennis Bree who assisted with the presentations.

The Next Generation

Also in celebration of 40 years of Croc Rugby, the up and coming generation of Palmerston Crocs - the juniors - recorded a Thursday night training session. Watch the ball pass up the grades from U5s through to U15s and even some seniors. Click on the image to watch the video.

Moulden Oval, July 2015

What a difference a year makes! This time last year Moulden Oval had extensive fire damage from cracker night and a lot of dead patches as a result of irrigation problems caused by vandalism.  This year, thanks to the removal of the hill and fencing of the field, Moulden Oval is in very good condition.
Palmerston Rugby Union Club values the strong and loyal support of our generous sponsors. Please support the businesses that support our club!
