Croc Tales
Edition 18 - 23/10/2014

Welcome to another edition of Croc Tales and what a fortnight it has been! The highlight was the successful first night of our Junior 7s Tournament last Friday 17 October.  More about this later in the edition but importantly, a big thank you to everyone that helped out in some way on the night to provide over 150 junior players (18 teams) the opportunity to play rugby during the off-season.

We have a number of senior players playing in the Heineken Super 7s (Corporate 7s) at Rugby Park on Saturday afternoons, and also at Rugby Park our NT Under 14 representatives are training hard twice a week in readiness for their tour to Malaysia next month.

Off-field, we have our AGM coming up on Sunday 2 November - it would be great to see a good turn out at this important meeting.

Some words from Stan Carnes, A Grade Coach

Ben introduced me in last week’s newsletter and has asked me to add a few words this week. By way of introduction, I’ve been coaching for the last 10 years across various levels ranging from Assistant Coach of the Combined Services backs to an Army Women’s Tour of New Zealand to 1st Grade and Colts Teams at Melbourne Rugby Club and Melbourne University. I’m very proud to have been involved with all of those teams and have worked with a lot of former Crocs players in them over the journey. I got into coaching because I broke my legs parachuting in the Army. (For those of you who have seen Misery, you get the picture).

Ultimately, coaching isn’t about me, it’s about you guys. As Graham Henry said, "It’s not about x's and o's, it’s about Richie's and Joes."  There has been a lot happening across the rugby world recently, with the resignation of Ewen McKenzie and now Michael Cheika taking over.  In the league world we've also seen Wayne Bennett return to the Broncos. I’m a big collector of quotes and something that Wayne Bennett said really stuck with me: “You only play footy for a limited period of time. Do you want to look back on this time with pride and fulfilment or frustration?”

SCC International Rugby Sevens

All the best to senior players Anthony Smith, Jay Jack and Greg Svanfelds who fly to Singapore next week to compete with East Arnhem Rugby Union Club in the SCC International Rugby Sevens being held from 31 October - 2 November. It will be a fantastic experience for these young players. The club has been in discussions with tour manager Colin Snowden and we plan on making this an annual event for our emerging senior players.

Heineken Super 7s

Heineken Super 7s

Back on the home front, a number of our seniors - particularly the U18 - are playing in the Heineken Super 7s (Corporate 7s). Thanks to Brocky and Smithy for coaching and coordinating this.

Junior 7s

Palmerston Junior 7s Tournament

Last week saw the first round of our Junior 7s Tournament and what a night it was: 18 teams including 2 all girls’ teams (pictured below) playing 7s rugby at our home ground at Moulden Oval. In all we had over 150 players and 17 games on the night - a solid indication that kids enjoy their rugby, regardless of the time of year!  We'll hopefully have some game reports in the next edition of Croc Tales.

Although we still have four weeks to go, we need to thank the many club members who helped in some way towards the successful running of the first night: the coaches and managers who looked after their teams; the referees (parents or coaches in the younger age groups, along with Paddy Bree, Glen Brady, Robbie Taylor and Anthony Smith (a special mention of Anthony, who did a huge job refereeing 8 games straight!);  Wendy & Mal Leach and Pauline & Ned Wyles-Kelly on the BBQ; Dennis Grant in the clubhouse, Fiona Weaver as sports trainer; Robbie Taylor for line-marking the fields the day before; and Ben & Selina Blyton for all their running around. Thank you for your support now and over the coming four weeks!

Junior 7s - Volunteers Welcome!

The Junior 7s Tournament is being run entirely by volunteers. Your help with any of the tasks below is welcomed and encouraged.

  • Referees, coaches, managers - now is an ideal opportunity to have a go at either refereeing, coaching or managing in an encouraging and non-pressured environment.  And we're sure that club officials will be happy for you to 'shadow' them if you're not entirely confident with jumping in the deep end.
  • Friday night BBQ - feeding hungry tummies is always a rewarding job!
  • Field set up and pack up - for some incidental exercise - many hands make light work!
  • Photographer  - Not bad at taking photos? It would be great if you could email through some photos for inclusion in Croc Tales for each fortnight.

Email the club here if you're interested or require further details or see any of the club officials at training or the games.

To all our newly registered club members who are receiving Croc Tales for the very first time, if you would like to catch up on last fortnight's edition you can do so here.

Somehow missed the Junior 7s note handed out at training? Click here for a copy of the note which provides a summary of key points about the tournament.

The Darwin Academy of Sport is hosting a range of talks with expert speakers that will benefit coaches, parents, sports administrators and emerging athletes alike.  The dates are 22 October, 5 November and 19 November and booking and event information can be found at: The club will subsidise the seminar costs for committed Palmerston coaches as well as for prospective coaches for the 2015 season.

If you are aged 16 years and over and you're interested in playing rugby, then come along to the NT Women's trials being held on Tuesday 18 November at Rugby Park. More details are available on the flyer available here.
Trivia Night

Trivia Night and Auction

A Halloween themed trivia and auction night is being held this coming Friday 31 October at the clubhouse from 6.30pmThis community event, generously supported by Raine & Horne, promises to be a fantastic night. Funds raised will go towards the NT U14s upcoming tour to Malaysia.

Annual General Meeting - Sunday 2 November

The AGM is fast approaching! We're always looking for new faces on the committee so if you would like to have a say in the running of the club or you're interested in helping out in some way, keep the date free and come down to the clubhouse on Sunday 2 November. Refreshments will be available after the AGM. Any enquiries please catch up with Ben (ph. 0417 082 531) or Rob Sloan (Club Secretary).

Bunnings BBQ # 5

On Sunday 12 October the club ran our 5th (and final for 2014) Bunnings BBQ.  Three shifts were covered by our some of our NT Under 14 representative players and their parents and one shift was run by players competing in the Singapore 7s. A huge thankyou to MLA for Drysdale Lia Finocchiaro for once again helping out with this fundraising event. Pictured (left) is Dena Mouten, Ruben Mouten, Jack Deane, Jacob Blyton, Aiden Holt and Fiona Weaver (Karen Deane, Eddie Weaver, Ben Blyton and Alexandra Blyton also helped out with shifts). On the right is Brock Evans, Greg Svanfelds, Lia Finocchiaro, Jay Jack and Anthony Smith.

Hottest 7s jersey designs

If you ever had the desire to design your own rugby jumper now is the time to do so!

The club is calling for designs for this year’s Hottest 7s jumpers. Let us know via email or catch up with one of the senior coaches with your idea.  The order for the 2015 jerseys will be sent by the end of this month, so get your ideas in soon!

Palmerston Sun

The Palmerston Sun is a positive supporter of local events and it was great to see an article about Round 1 of the Juniors 7s in this week's paper.  Click on the image to read about what coach Jamie Akers had to say about the U13+ Girls first games for the tournament.

U12 Archives

Under 12s Archives

This is a photo from the club archives of an U12 side - it caught our attention because it could almost be a 7s side, but we know that's not the case! We don't have any names or know when the photo was taken - if you know who these fine young men are it would be great to hear from you! Just send though a quick email here.
