Croc Tales
Edition 17 - 9/10/2014

Welcome to another editions of Croc Tales - it's either the first edition for season 2015 or one of the last for season 2014, depending on your point of view.

There's been a bit happening since the senior and junior presentation nights back in August, so we thought we'd get an edition out to let everyone know that rugby is still going on, even in the off-season. With the 7s season almost upon us, we will in fact issue four editions of Croc Tales over the coming weeks, so stay tuned...

Club President

What's on next week...

Saturday 11 October - Corporate 7s for senior players and under 18s commences at Rugby Park, Marrara.

Sunday 12 October - Bunnings BBQ # 5. Drop by and say hello!

Friday 17 October - Junior 7s Tournament kicks off at our home ground. Game times will be available shortly (the draw is currently being finalised).

New First Grade Coach

The club is pleased to announce the appointment of Stan Carnes as first grade coach for 2015.  Stan has had a previous stint in the Top End with the Army but has recently returned as the Regional Services Manager of Elbit Systems Ltd. Stan has many years coaching experience, with Australian Services Rugby and more recently with Melbourne University Rugby Football Club.  It’s great to have Stan on board and players can look forward to many fresh and new ideas within the coaching in 2015. Our Under 13s were fortunate to have experienced Stan's coaching last Tuesday night, when Stan stepped in at short notice to help coach the boys training for the Junior 7s tournament. Thanks Stan, great club spirit!

Singapore 7s

Three of our senior players have been invited to play with East Arnhem Rugby Union Club in the Singapore 7s held later this month.  Anthony Smith, Jay Jack and Greg Svanfelds are sure to enjoy the experience and will be handy assets for the East Arnhem team. We're currently discussing with East Arnhem club the possibility of a permanent arrangement for our players to join their team and get this international rugby experience. We're also supporting our young players by assisting with their accommodation expenses while in Singapore. All the best to Anthony, Jay and Greg!

Seniors and Under 18s - Corporate 7s

Closer to home, Palmerston is once again supporting teams in the Corporate 7s (Heineken Super 7s) and senior and under 18s training is well underway for those that are interested in participating in this event.  Training is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.15 and the first games are this weekend at Rugby Park, Contact either Brock (0408 969 200) or Smithy (0404 455 420) for full details.

Hottest 7s in the World (24-25 January)

The Hottest 7s Tournament will next year be expanded to include an under 18 competition for the first time, as well as a more social 10-a-side competition. In recent years the club has used the Hottest 7s to give young players a taste of seniors rugby, with last years A Grade players Greg Svanfelds and Jay Jack examples of this.
All under 17 players from 2014 are strongly encouraged to consider making themselves available to play in either the Under 18 or the Senior 7s team in the 2015 Tournament.  The cost will between $50 and $70 and for that you will receive a once-off jumper and training singlet.

Expanded Mozzies Tours

In 2015 the Mozzies tours have been expanded to include 7s Rugby. A senior side as well as an Under 18s sides are scheduled to tour. Keep in mind that to be selected, you have to play in the Hottest 7s - either for the Mozzies if selected or for another side.

NT Under 14 Representative Team

Congratulations to the eight Palmerston juniors selected in the NT Under 14 Team that will tour Malaysia next month: Ruben Mouton, Jack Deane, Jacob Blyton, Ryan Otto, Wayne Bilston, Aiden Holt, Eddie Weaver and Dylan Wells.  The team management includes Wayne Smith as Head Coach and Robbie Taylor as Assistant Coach. Congratulations and all the best boys, it will be an amazing experience for you all.

Junior 7s

Palmerston Junior 7s Tournament

Tuesday this week saw our first training night for our 2014 Junior 7s competition. There was a good turn out, particularly in the younger age groups.  A huge welcome to all new players and their families and welcome back to all existing players!

The draw is being finalised and will be out shortly.  We have a number of visiting teams across all age groups and we look forward to welcoming these clubs to our home ground in the coming weeks.

On another note, the club realises that some people may have other commitments on Tuesday nights and can't make training. If a player can only make it on Friday nights and would like to play, just email the club here so that we can confirm teams.

Junior 7s - Volunteers Welcome!

The Junior 7s Tournament is being run entirely by volunteers. Your help with any of the roles below is welcomed and encouraged.

Referees, coaches, managers - the Junior 7s is an ideal opportunity to have a go at either refereeing, coaching or managing in an encouraging and non-pressured environment. With the younger age groups, no experience is required - the club will assist you with what you need to know.

Friday night BBQ - feeding hungry tummies is always a rewarding job!

Field set up and pack up - Club members will be at the clubhouse from 5pm. For some incidental exercise, come along and help set up the fields and the bbq area, and for the night owls - it all needs to be packed away again after the last game!

Email the club here if you're interested or require further details.

Juniors - were you unable to make presentation night and haven't yet received your medal and team photo? These are being held at the clubhouse which will be open from 5.00 on Tuesdays and Fridays for the duration of the Junior 7s Tournament.  You are welcome to drop into the clubhouse within these times to collect your awards.

The Darwin Academy of Sport is hosting a range of talks with expert speakers that will benefit coaches, parents, sports administrators and emerging athletes alike.  The dates are 22 Oct, 5 Nov and 19 Nov and booking and event information can be found at: The club will subsidise the seminar costs for committed Palmerston coaches as well as for prospective coaches for the 2015 season.

Bunnings BBQ this Sunday

The club will be running its fifth Bunnings BBQ for the year this Sunday 12 October. Three of the shifts will be run by some of our  NT Under 14 reps and their parents and one shift will be run by players competing in the Singapore 7s. Drop by and say hello, they would love to see you (and sell you a sausage and onions in bread). Pictured are Jacob and Eddie (front) at a BBQ earlier this year. Both will be there on Sunday.

United Paintball

The seniors are organising a fantastic off-season event to get all new and returning players together in the lead up to the pre-season.  Partners are also very welcome! The event is Paintball, the date is Saturday 25 October and the time is 2pm to 5pm. There will be a BBQ afterwards. Contact Stan Carnes for further details (ph. 0425 969 680).

Annual General Meeting

The AGM will be held on Sunday 2 November. We're always looking for new faces on the committee, so if you want to have a say in the running of the club or you're interested in helping out, keep the date free and come down to the clubhouse on Sunday 2nd. Refreshments will be available after the AGM.

Jersey design

Do you have a design in your head that you would like to see the club wearing? We're interested in the what the players think.  Let us know via email or catch up with one of the senior coaches with your idea. The order for the 2015 jerseys will be sent by the end of this month, so get your ideas in soon!

Tawera (Narada) Kerr-Barlow

Our thoughts are with Tawera (Narada) Kerr-Barlow, who suffered a serious knee injury when playing for the All Blacks against South Africa last weekend. Unfortunately it looks like Narada will be missing a bit of rugby over the next full months, but we wish him all the best with his recovery. Click on the image from for details.

There's been a bit of a 7s theme running through this edition of Croc Tales, so here's a Corporate 7s team from 2002 made up of Palmerston Crocs and a bear or two. (Click on the photo for an enlargement.)
