Back-to-School Success!
For this special article, we spoke with three mothers of children with varying challenges and diagnoses about their back-to-school routines. Specifically, we asked them, “What tips do you have for other parents experiencing similar challenges?”

Some of the amazing tips in they gave us are:
  • Schedule IEP meetings early!
  • Be proactive in introducing change to your child.
  • Use visual cues and concrete rules in creating routine.

Inclusion in the Classroom:
How can I make sure my student is receiving the best opportunities in school?

The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center has multiple resources to help caregivers ensure students are included in the classroom environment. TRIAD's Families First Program provides practical tools for supporting your children in and out of school. Learn more about the Families First Program, including their upcoming September workshop on Addressing Challenging Behavior.

CALLER:
Hi, I am a mother of an 8-year-old, and I want help for my son at school if -- no when -- he has behavioral problems. I plan to request an IEP meeting for mid-September, and I have already written that letter to request the meeting, and I’ll mail it. But first I want to schedule an advocate. I understand that it is very helpful to have someone with me who is trained, and can help me with the meeting. How do I get an advocate?
