Growing with Able

We are so excited to share with you some of the many activities and outings that our staff and participants were involved in over the Winter months. Keep an eye out for our next newsletter in the next couple of months. Be sure to follow us on our Facebook page to see the latest news and event announcements.

Facility Highlight

All We Need is a Campfire
& Good Company

We enjoyed an indoor camping day this summer, including campfire stories, dipped marshmallows in graham crackers and chocolate, a mini camper craft, and outdoor games such as cornhole. We discussed our favorite things about camping and even enjoyed our indoor camping area. Pictured, Stephen, Delcie, Mark, and Bill are enjoying our indoor camping site.

Knitting Club Update

Our knitting & crocheting club continues to make hats and scarves (upwards of 38 done already!) donated to a Giving Tree in Gamehaven during the winter months and to local seniors who may require these items. Pictured are Marie (left) and Kristina (right), working on items for donation. We also have some ladies working on personal projects, such as latch hook items; pictured in the middle is Chelsy proudly holding her finished item.

Community Volunteering & Events

Gettysburg Battlefield

The Gettysburg National Military Park is a beautiful area to visit during the summer, an area full of rich American history. Alexi, Matthew, and Scott are pictured posing with a cannon while Major General George Gordon Meade and his horse Old Baldy stand stoically in the background.

Cherry Lane’s Boxed Lunch Review

Nestled behind the Central Market, a small stage and seating area for the public's enjoyment is often filled with melodic sounds from various musically gifted people who perform during the summer. The Parliament Arts Organization hosts these events, and we have enjoyed many artists, including The Shine Foundation and Ralph Real & the Family Jam. Pictured, Amberlyn, Ethan, and Caleb enjoying lunch and music.

MilitaryShare

With the spirit of giving and thanks, our group volunteered at the Shiloh Legion 791 for Military Share, a monthly program that provides veterans and their families with essentials and food. Pictured to the left; Maurice, Amberlyn, and Rachel help bag and prepare items to be distributed.

🐠🐠Just Keep Swimming🐠🐠

This summer, groups visited various locations to cool off; as pictured above, Ethan, Kristina, and Alexis channel their inner fish and take a dip at Red Lion High School's Pool during a community swim day. In the picture below, Matthew and Coleman are splashin' around at Red Lion's Splash Pad.

♫ You are my sunshine, my only sunshine ♫

Flinchbaugh’s Orchard is hosting a lot of late summers; early fall picks your events. Groups have ventured out to the sunflower & zinnia fields and apple orchards. Along the way, Amar, Rachel, and Colin stopped for some impromptu photos.

Movin’ & Groovin’ at the JCC Gym

Pictured, Coleman is all smiles while working out with Ethan M., and Wayne on the exercise bikes in the main exercise room at the Jewish Community Center.

Greenhouse Happenings

“The Earth Laughs in Flowers.”

Chrysanthemums are loved worldwide, and these beautiful blooms symbolize happiness, fidelity, honesty, and friendship. The Chrysanthemums, better known as Mums, are a popular floral decoration for the September and October months. Each bloom of the mum is made of hundreds of tiny flowers called florets. The plant ranges in size from a standard small cushion mum to the giant spider mums, and they bloom in almost every color of the rainbow with leaves that are a beautiful blue-green. Pictured is one of the many mums sold out of the greenhouse, lovingly cared for by our greenhouse manager Mike and all of our participants & staff. Stop by and grab one of these beauties now through October 6th, 9 AM - 4 PM. You can find more information here on our Facebook page.

Tasty Food in the Making

Not only do participants engage in greenhouse activities that aid in their knowledge and skills in horticulture, but they also get to use the herbs and vegetables that they grow to make yummy snacks, sauces, and treats. Picture Mike is teaching Colin, Jessica, and Nicole the steps to create a delicious pesto sauce to be used with their dish of choice. Pictured below is Patrick scooping out a tasty salsa with herbs and vegetables from our greenhouse.
