About the Book

SO YOU THINK YOU'RE ASEXUAL is the working title of my first long nonfiction work.  It takes a look at asexuality in an authentic way by covering the questions and issues that both asexual and non-asexual people might have about asexuality. It's designed to cover what asexuality is and isn't, discuss the types of asexuality and how asexual people's relationships look, examine the asexual community and its relationship with the queer community, and counter/address the many misleading and damaging messages that society perpetuates about asexuality.

Asexual people will also find tips on how to come out, how to network, how to deal with questions, and how to address critics. Friends and loved ones of asexual people can read a section directed at them which contains reassuring information about the reservations they may have about asexuality. And a resources section provides connections to academic research, video and audio interviews with asexual personalities, mainstream media articles, and primarily Internet-based discussion and networking opportunities for asexual people.

The book is written in accessible, non-academic language, and should function as a starting point for people interested in asexuality on any level. It isn't a comprehensive look at the subject--more of a beginning--and it is not the final word on asexuality, but is also not a single-perspective biographical story of its author. It will be around 200 pages, about 65,000 words.

Publishing Details

[Skyhorse Publishing Logo]
The parent company that acquired SO YOU THINK YOU'RE ASEXUAL is Skyhorse Publishing.
In the fall of 2014, Skyhorse is launching their new imprint: Carrel Books. They will be a library-focused imprint, debuting with a list of 20 to 30 titles on a variety of nonfiction topics. What this means for SO YOU THINK YOU'RE ASEXUAL is that it will be published in hardcover and e-book, and will not initially be marketed to bookstores; the publisher will focus on selling to libraries, and if the book has good sales and good circulation, there is a chance it will be brought out in paperback on another Skyhorse imprint. Individuals will be able to purchase the book in hardcover and e-book through,, and other mainstream book sale sites, as well as the publisher's site, but I'll need some help from supporters to make sure it gets ordered at a ton of libraries if the book is ever going to see paperback and marketing to the mainstream! More details will become available in the coming months as to how you can help by getting your library to order it or buying copies for your personal library or your queer/GSM/GSA organization!

About the Journey

Signing the contract!
Signing a publishing contract seems like a beginning, but this story began over a year ago!
  • April 7, 2012: Began writing first draft.
  • May 21, 2012: Finished first draft and wrote a proposal; began querying agents. Received two statements of interest.
  • August 20, 2012: Went on a querying hiatus due to distractions surrounding getting signed for my fiction.
  • January 24 - 28, 2013: Went to LGBT conference Creating Change and participated in an asexuality panel. Was inspired to resume querying for the book.
  • May 23, 2013: Accepted an offer of representation from my literary agent, Andrea Somberg of Harvey Klinger. Refined my proposal with her help.
  • June 6, 2013: Put the book on submission to publishers.
  • August 13, 2013: Received first offer of publication.
  • September 30, 2013: Received second offer of publication.
  • October 22, 2013: Received third offer of publication.
  • October 28, 2013: After a conference with my agent, decided which offer to take. Contract negotiations began.
  • November 19, 2013: Accepted an offer of publication from Skyhorse.
If you're interested in what goes into writing proposals and how my submissions process went, one of my YouTube videos discusses it!

I've been steadily working on the book itself throughout this process. An early request for full manuscript readers went out in February 2013 and received 75 volunteers. A request for focus groups to read excerpts went out in October 2013 and received 120 volunteers. As a result of all the fantastic feedback, the book has outgrown its initial estimation of 45,000 to 50,000 words, ending up at nearly 65,000 words and covering a lot more ground. It also includes quote boxes from 20 talented asexual bloggers.
