The Ballard House Salutes the Katy Students, our VIP Summer Volunteers

Bottom: Exley elementary teachers could not wait for school to start, so they showed up to organize The Ballard House library.

Many thanks to all of the "Katy Kids" and their families who made The Ballard House their favorite place to volunteer over the summer. Our guests have enjoyed your cookouts, ice cream sundae socials, friendship bracelets, and game nights. The staff has really enjoyed you organizing the library and game room, building shelves, pulling weeds, and assisting with database entry...even doing laundry. We wish all of you a successful school year and look forward to seeing your happy faces around this fall.

Meet one of our families...

The guests at The Ballard House have expressed how much easier and more pleasant it makes their stay in Katy during treatment, knowing they have friends here who really care about them and show it by their kind gestures. The Mack Family says it best...
"Trina and my family just want to take a moment to thank you all for what you have done for us these past 3 months.  Having The Ballard House accept our application took so much pressure off an already pressure cooked situation.  Financially of course with income slowing and bills piling up this was one item that gave us much relief and lifted our spirits to the point of happy tears.  You all made a huge difference for us!!
Since January when we were notified back in Kentucky that Trina had a large tumor in her head things went from not so bad, to pretty bad, to worse, to life flight her to Houston MD Anderson because time is running out.  Being split from Emily & Eric for months while Trina endured 2 surgeries, the 1st in February and the 2nd in May.  Finally we had to come down to Houston for Proton Therapy from June to August for the remainder of her treatment.
It was great to be able to have our children here and to not be separated from them.  I can say that helped us so much and we all grew and supported each other during this difficult time.  Furthermore having others around to talk to that were in similar situations was helpful to us all.  I met a dear friend Sam & his wife Kathy from New York here and it was great to share what we were going through.  We helped each other and in turn we were stronger for our families.  Its a unique and special relationship you have with others when life and circumstances are so dire.
The meals made, the iPad, toys and care packages given in love, the kitchen and pantry, the office area, tv area, chapel, the back yard & fountains (which Trina loved), the laundry rooms and just everything was comfortable, peaceful, and very conducive to healing.  It became a home away from home.  The only way that could have happened was the love that so many put into The Ballard House. Thank You so."

Our August Dinner Angels
"Ticktocker" Savannah, member of the Lady Bird Chapter of NCL, delivering home baked muffins to The Ballard House guests. What a gift to come home to a delicious meal being served by new friends, after a long, long day of treatment and driving in traffic. Your generosity and hospitality is what makes The Ballard House “a home away from home.”

Katy Chamber of Commerce Chick-Fil-A Breakfast

The Ballard House had the honor of hosting the July Katy Chamber of Commerce Business Builders Breakfast , which was catered by Jennifer Pierce and Chick-Fil-A. The guest speaker, Dr. Gregory Chronowski, Associate Professor of Radiology/Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Katy shared with an enthusiastic crowd of 70 their unique approach to individual case studies and the different treatment options available right here in Katy.

Girl Scout conquers the Gold

Before the doors of The Ballard House opened, Andrea Rogan, a Girl Scout for 12 years and senior at Taylor High School, determined that her Gold Award would be earned through a service project at this new "home away from home" for seriously ill patients. In the summer of 2011, Andrea underwent major facial reconstruction surgery which resulted in a long recovery period. She knew firsthand how important it was for people to feel cared about and to have something quiet and relaxing to do after receiving medical treatment. Therefore, Andrea chose the library to accomplish her goal. She raised funds to purchase cases of books, two e-readers, a Keurig coffee maker with a year supply of assorted coffees, teas, and hot drinks. Andrea's legacy will live on through her Katy Chapter NCL friends tending to The Ballard House library. Congratulations Andrea and good luck on your new venture at Texas Lutheran University this fall!

Magic Show

Magic is in the air!  Recognize this man with the cards up his sleeve? By day Dr. John Dahlinger, is a small animal surgeon with NHVS at the new Katy location. His performance was such a hit---the Doc will be a regular at The Ballard House.
