Our Schools, Our Superintendent

Pittsburgh -- At Great Public Schools (GPS) we congratulate Dr. Linda Lane on her service to the Pittsburgh Public Schools. We have appreciated Dr. Lane’s accessibility and straightforward approach to her work—as well as her dedication to all PPS students.

As the Board of Education begins the process of searching for a new Superintendent, GPS calls on the Board to conduct its search in a way that solicits, synthesizes and prioritizes input from parents, students, teachers, community members and leaders.

School Board members are democratically elected specifically to perform the function of screening for, interviewing and ultimately hiring a superintendent. At GPS, we support the democratic process that is currently in place, which puts the elected School Board in the position of screening the candidates and making the final decision.

The last two School Board elections sent a clear statement that the electorate wants a School Board with educational experience and expertise, a passion for education justice, and new initiatives such as Community Schools, Restorative Justice and access to quality Early Childhood Education. The incoming Board is ready, willing, and qualified to take on their responsibility of hiring a new Superintendent.

Great Public Schools is founded on the belief that strong public schools make strong communities. The coalition partners that make up GPS represent community, faith, and labor organizations that are working together for education justice in Pittsburgh.
