Friends of MICD,

When, in January, we asked mayors and design leaders who participated in MICD last year to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of the coming decade, we could hardly have foreseen the public health crisis that is currently unfolding across the world. But perhaps that was the point, as designing for an uncertain future is the role of mayors and the design and development community alike, and rapid change is the “new normal” for cities. We compiled the answers from that informal survey into the article linked below, which I hope you enjoy.

Mayors and design leaders predict the coming decade for cities

"The bottom line will be quality of life, not ROI."

How do you design for an uncertain future? We asked dozens of our alumni mayors and Resource Team members to reflect on what the next decade will bring for cities. The respondents — 44 mayors and 45 design leaders — all participated in the Mayors' Institute last year.

Answers ranged from the practical to the alarmist, from the aspirational to the fantastical. Within the 64 responses we receive, five interrelated themes emerged.
