March 2016 Newsletter - National Marine Educators Association

March 2016 headerDear NMEA members,

As we put a busy winter behind us, we move into an even busier spring. The NMEA Mid-year Board Meeting takes place today in Nashville, Tenn. Tomorrow is the first day of the National Science Teachers Association annual conference, and more importantly for us, the NMEA Share-a-thon and track of sessions. NMEA welcomes NSTA attendees to the NMEA hall, decorated this year by host chapter Tennessee Educators of Aquatic and Marine Sciences (TEAMS) and showcases its membership benefits. At the same time our chapters set up their own tables so they can highlight a little of what they do for their members and regional educators. We also utilize this day to feature professional development workshops created and presented by NMEA members. These sessions run consecutively beginning at 9:30 a.m. This is a popular series, so get there early!

The Florida Marine Science Educators Association (FMSEA) is working very hard to create a memorable conference in Orlando at the end of June. You will learn a bit more about that event elsewhere in this newsletter. We hope that you’ve made plans to join us in sunny Florida.

In this issue you will also be learning about the upcoming membership drive. Your membership is very important to NMEA. Your connections and ability to bring in a new member or two is critical, too.  I invite you to think of the three most descriptive words for NMEA, as these members did, and use those adjectives as a hook to introduce your colleagues to NMEA.

In the meantime, please know that your NMEA leadership continues to work on implementing several aspects of the strategic plan and on creating new partnerships.

Thank you for all that you do to make known the world of water!

Robert C Rocha Jr.
NMEA President 2015-2016

It's almost that time! NMEA is reaching out to bring in new members to our dynamic organization. Our annual Membership Drive will officially start on Earth Day, April 22, and run through World Oceans Day, June 8.

All new members signed up in the designated time period will be placed in an ‘opportunity drawing’ for some ocean and aquatic themed prizes! Mark your calendars and learn more here >

Current coverShare your ideas, lessons, or research in marine education in our journal! The editors of Current: The Journal of Marine Education are seeking articles for upcoming general issues. Get additional details on how you can submit a piece for publication here > The next submission deadline will be July 25.

The journal is a benefit of NMEA membership and current members who are logged into our website can access digital issues of Current. The next general issue will be available soon, and in case you missed it - this special issue of Current was supported in part by the University of Georgia Office of Public Service and Outreach and its units in Marine Extension and the Georgia Sea Grant College Program!
