June 2015
Newsletter

Thanks for a wonderful year!

As the school year comes to a close, the PTO extends a heartfelt thanks to each and every family at PS 9 for all of your contributions—small, medium and large! Whether you chaperoned a class trip or made popcorn for Movie Night, you were part of the supportive community that is PS 9.

Together, we raised over $120,000 to support enrichment programs at the school. Music, art, dance, Playworks, the garden program—none of these would be possible without your financial contributions and your commitment to do whatever is needed to support our students and staff.

There isn’t enough space in your inbox for us to list everything, but above is a sampling of some of the amazing events and activities that wouldn’t have been possible without you. We hope you enjoy this last newsletter of the year. Have a wonderful summer, and we’ll see you in September!

Help a New Family in the Fall!

The PTO is starting a New Family Buddy System in the fall. It will match existing PS 9 families with families of incoming PS 9 students. Our hope is to give new families an initial welcome to PS 9, and to build on our wonderful and diverse community.

If would like to participate in the New Family Buddy System, please email Emily (emilykurtz@gmail.com) or Cynthia (cynthiayahia@gmail.com).  All new families will receive a letter in July, announcing the program. We will then contact you if you have been matched to a new family and provide their contact info.

Once you have been matched to an incoming PS 9 family, we hope you will reach out to them to see if they have questions. You may want to invite them to a meal, perhaps a picnic in the park or a play date at Underhill Playground. Having the kids meet in person would give the incoming student a familiar face (and maybe a new friend) in the fall.

Please consider joining us in the New Family Buddy System!

5,146 lbs!

PS 9 hit record breaking numbers as a first-time location for a GrowNYC Stop’n’Swap. The free community event on June 14 drew 361 people. Over five thousand pounds of items were donated—the second most weighted total in Stop’n’Swap history!

Don't Forget

Please settle your lunch bills before summer break. MyLunchMoney.com will be deactivated for the summer on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. If you still owe money after this date, payments should be made directly at the school. Last year, the school had to pay a substantial amount to cover unpaid bills, so please be sure you don’t owe anything before the break.

Thank you to the amazing teachers and staff at PS 9 for a wonderful year!

Brooklyn Cyclones Night

Join the PS 9 family for a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game in Coney Island. The game is Saturday, June 27, at 6 pm, with a PS 9 parade on the field before the game and post-game fireworks. There are still tickets available. Contact Mark Jaffe: mark@markhjaffe.net.
