Harmony in practice

Recently, Pre-K teacher Thania Hernandez was surprised to hear she was being flown to San Diego to attend an awards ceremony recognizing her achievement in teaching Harmony in her classroom. Sanford Harmony is a program designed for teachers to improve the learning atmosphere in the classroom by promoting positive social and emotional relationships. The program, developed at the Sanford Educational Center, was funded and established in 2014 by philanthropist T. Denny Sanford. On a recent visit, Mr. Sanford got to see Ms. Hernandez introduce her class of early learners to a Harmony character named Z. Z, who is from outer space, helps her teach social skills and how to “decide together,” as Ms. Hernandez put it. This year Sanford Harmony will roll out in seven schools in the borough, including PS 9. Principal D’Avilar said she believes that Harmony is a perfect fit for our “Whole Child” school, since the focus on developing emotional and social skills complements the Whole Child Network philosophy.

Recycling grows at PS 9!

Last year, as part of GrowNYC’s Recycling Champions Program, all PS 9 classrooms were outfitted with recycling bins. Students in Pre-K through Grade 5 were given mini-workshops on how to sort trash properly. Now we're expanding our bin distribution to the cafeteria and all common areas. Pete (our head custodian) has placed an order for these bins, and in coming months, students will be active in recycling throughout the school. Classes will visit the recycling center to give them hands-on experience in sorting recyclables and deepen their understanding of the recycling process. We are forming a Green Team of students, parents and teachers. If you’d like to help the effort to increase sustainability at PS 9, please contact Carol Clouse (

The PTO Annual Appeal: We need you!

First, big heartfelt thanks to all who have generously donated so far.  We urgently need your support to ensure our kids have access to the kinds of learning and resources so important in the 21st century: hands-on science, math and robotics, as well as art, movement and dynamic reading materials.

We know life is busy and that many of you intend to support us as soon as you can. We appreciate it, and we’re ready when you are! Your tax-deductible donation is a wise investment -- one that pays untold dividends into a child’s future, and for the rest of a child’s life.

Learning Together. Make It Real.

Did you know?

This summer a crew installed acoustic ceiling panels in the PS 9 cafeteria, to make it easier to hear the person next to you.  A grant from Lowe’s Companies covered part of the costs for the improvement, and the PTO covered the rest. The panels absorb sound and reduce the cumulative effect of a hundred young voices all trying to be heard at once. This was another step to make the cafeteria a calmer, less intimidating place for lower-grade kids.

Picture Day is coming up November 12 and 13. If you have time to volunteer on either day (for example, neatening hair, helping kids get in position) please email Krystal Linton at

Pumpkin Patch was a great event for the whole community and we're so thankful to all the volunteers who baked, served, painted, sang and came out in support of our school at this wonderful annual fall event.

Please donate to the PTO! All funds benefit arts, enrichment programs and teacher support for our PS 9 students. To donate, drop off a check to the "PS 9 PTO" in the PTO mailbox in the main office, or donate online.
