The Nutcracker Ballet

200 pairs of dancing feet, 26 separate numbers, 8 lead roles, 2 complete acts and 1 magical nutcracker -- all performed flawlessly under the direction of Ms. Iris Wilson, dance educator at PS 9, in the December 18th production of The Nutcracker Ballet.

For the second year in a row, Ms. Wilson performed her own magic by choreographing and directing a full two-act version of the classic Nutcracker ballet with a corps of 200 PS 9 students from lower and upper grades. This year's performance was held at John Jay High School in Park Slope. With its large auditorium able to seat the expectant crowd of parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, administrators and adoring friends, John Jay offered an ample theater setting that added to the professional ambiance Ms. Wilson inspires as a teacher and accomplished dancer in her own right.

The PS 9 PTO community wishes to thank the extraordinary Ms. Wilson, Krystal Linton for her tireless assistance with the production, Principal Sandra D'Avilar, Parent Coordinator Charmaine Jacobs, Carol Sheldrake-Hernandez, Yvette Brown and all the parents who contributed to the success of The Nutcracker. Whether sewing tutus, pinning buns, selling tickets, or feeding hungry tots during intermission, it takes a village and this event was a shining confirmation of what makes our PS 9 community so special.

Our website needs your help!

The PTO recently re-launched our PS 9 website but more work is needed to correct formatting and update content. We need your help with this important task. If you have working knowledge of web design and WordPress, we could really use your skills. However, helping hands of all levels will be put to good use. If you can pitch in a few hours of your time, please contact Dianne Darbouse at diondarb@gmail.com. Thank YOU!

Did you know?

The PS 9 PTO will host a Community Housing forum on Saturday, February 6, 2016, from 1:00PM - 4:00PM in the PS 9 Auditorium. It will be an opportunity to hear local officials and several non-profit agencies share insights and strategies on affordable housing in Prospect Heights and our surrounding neighborhoods. Come join us as elected officials, community-based organizations, and the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council (PHNDC) come together to present a forum on housing in our community. Panelists from the Fifth Avenue Committee, IMPACCT Brooklyn and Mutual Housing Association of New York will discuss what tenants can do if harassed by their landlords. Community members will also learn how they can prepare for and enter lotteries for affordable housing, which affordable apartments are leased and how to sign up for notifications when affordable housing becomes available in the area. The presenters will be available after the panel to answer questions from the audience. Whether you are searching for an affordable apartment or would like to find out more about how affordable housing meets the needs of a diverse neighborhood, we hope you'll join us on February 6 at 1:00PM in our Auditorium.

PS 9 PTO Fundraising Committee sets its sights on greater Prospect Heights community

The Fundraising Committee would like to extend another HUGE thank you to those who contributed to the PS 9 Direct Appeal in 2015. It was a tremendously successful campaign thanks to your generosity. By late December we were nearing 65% of our overall goal of $150,000 raised for the school year! With more students attending PS 9 each fall, however, the need continues to increase. For those of you who have not yet contributed -- you can still make a difference. With that in mind, the Fundraising Committee will now be turning its attention to the extended community to help PS 9 grow. There is an enormous amount of opportunity to create mutually beneficial relationships with developers and other businesses in our area. A rising tide floats all boats -- as the expression goes. If anyone has a great contact in the community that could help in this pursuit, please email PTO Co-President for Fundraising, Alicia Nosenzo at alilounos@me.com. Thank you!
