What's New in APPLE Phones and Tablets

iPhone 7 and 7Plus

In early September, Apple is expected to announce its new phone, the iphone 7 and iphone 7Plus (the names might be changed). The phone size will be similar to the 6 (and 6S) models. The big expected change is the removal of the headphone serial port. Instead, you'll need to use bluetooth headphones or headphones that connect to the lightning port (where the power plugs in as well).

Should I Upgrade to a New Phone?
If you have an iphone 4 or 5, this is a good time to upgrade. We expect the 6S/6S Plus to come down in price when the new phone is launched. Since there aren't that many new features in the 7 series, you may find the 6S a more cost-effective choice. When you upgrade, we recommend getting the 64gb model (or 32gb if available).

iOS 10

The upgrade to the phone software (iOS 10) was announced this June and has been in testing mode. iOS 10 will have a mix of new features and improvements to existing apps. Look for expanded Siri functions, customizable control panel, and an updated Music app. The Phone app will now transcribe your voicemails so you can read as well as listen to them. The Photos app has been updated to find faces. It will draw together photos linked by place, people and time - and automatically create a highlight reel. Messages gets some fun upgrades to include summaries of linked items and do more with emoji's! The Maps app will even remember where you parked your car!

Should I upgrade to iOS 10?
In general, you will want to upgrade to iOS 10 at some point just not right away. For all major releases, we recommend waiting until a few bug releases have come out, usually about a month or so. iOS 10 has many new features that sound pretty worthwhile. Also, eventually, developers will stop supporting the older version. So you'll have to upgrade. We will start to include iOS 10 in our classes in October/November. Let us know if you'd be interested in an iOS 10 workshop.

Before upgrading - and in general, it’s important to have a good backup of your device. To make a backup, do the following:

  1. Get on WiFI
  2. Plug your device into the wall
  3. Go to Settings > icloud > Backup
  4. Turn on iCloud Backup
  5. Hit Backup Now

When the backup is complete, it will say “Last backup on ….” just below the Backup Now button.

What's New in CLASSES

Photo Classes

Summer is the time for making memories. And when you're traveling, you're probably taking great photos! We have some classes to help you organize your photos and create a lasting keepsake. In the Managing Your Photos class, you'll learn how to get photos from your camera, smartPhone or tablet, organize them to make them easier to find, back them up and prepare them for printing in a photobook. In the Make a Photobook workshop, you'll use point-and-click software to design your own keepsake book you can easily pickup in your local store! Check our calendar below to see when we are offering these two exciting classes!

iPad/iPhone Basics Series

We offer three classes on using the iPad and iPhone:

  • Basics 1: Getting to Know Your Device
  • Basics 2: Essential Applications
  • Basics 3: Beyond!
Each class is meets for 2 - two hour sessions. The classes review and build upon each other. Many students find it helpful to repeat Basics 1 or 2 before moving on. Read our course catalog for complete class descriptions. And check our calendar for upcoming dates.

iOS 10 Workshop

This fall we expect a release of the iOS 10 will bring many interesting changes. We're going to start to include it in our classes but will also be offering a one day workshop (in October/November) to highlight the new features. Let us know if you'd be interested and we'll send you a notice once we set the date and time.
