August General Meeting

Identify and Track Down RFI

(& the SolarEdge Problem).

Our August monthly meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August  7, 7:30 – 9:00 p.m., at the Pine Avenue Community Center located at Harding St. & Pine Avenue, Carlsbad.
3209 Harding St, Carlsbad, CA 92008

This month, we will center on practical experience, and construction of simple ham radio friendly equipment needed to track down RFI in your neighborhood, identify the source, and deal with correction of the problem.

The material presented will show extensive details of the hardware and procedures used by KQ6RS (Randy Stanke) in successfully dealing with RFI emitted by the Solar Edge corporation’s installations.

We will also look at the RFI measuring hardware and procedures apply to any RFI source.

Show and Tell at the General Meeting

Do you have an interesting ham shack to show?
Do you have something you would like to share or demo with the group?
PARC would love to see it and heard about it.
It would be great to put together a "show and tell" program for a PARC membership meeting but we need your support.
There are 2 ways you can participate and you can do BOTH if you wish!
  1. If you would be willing to talk for 5-10 minutes about your shack, please email at least five pictures to board@palomararc.org. Please include your antenna and maybe how your coax gets in/out of your shack.
We will put a slideshow together and give multiple members the opportunity to share.
  2. If you have an item you would like to bring to share, just email a brief note to board@palomararc.org that you have something to share and are willing to talk for 5-10 minutes.
We will update everyone at the next PARC meeting on what we have received and see if we can pick a date for PARC show and tell!

President's Report

Fellow HAMs, Summer is passing quickly and our PICNIC is approaching just as fast! As we have done in recent years, the picnic has been schedule for late September, so we don’t have to battle extreme August heat. See below for details.

We are also trying something new for SCOPE delivery. Instead of a web link, you will receive the newsletter entirely in your email, via mailchimp.  We will also archive PDF copies on the website for future reference. This should allow for a more streamlined and consistent newsletter experience for everyone!

Silent Keys

We have recently become aware of some SK notifications that were missed, so we apologize that they were not timely.  These individuals were long-time members of PARC and they are missed by many.

Fredric Lyman Smittle: Technical Support/Customer Relations/Product Demonstrations
March 6, 1945 – September 19, 2018

It is with great sadness in our hearts that we relay the news of Fred’s passing.

Fred was our long-time tech support person here at Sherline Products, but more importantly our friend and a friend to many.

Prior to working for Sherline, Fred was a tool & die maker and a machine shop teacher at Mira Costa. He had a wealth of knowledge about all aspects of the trade and thoroughly enjoyed sharing his knowledge.

After Fred started working at Sherline, he quickly became familiar with our product line. With the combination of his trade knowledge and his knowledge of our product line, Fred was able to assist all of our customer’s needs. Whether it was explaining how to use one of our machines or accessories, relaying what type of tooling or cutters to use for a specific material or operation, or guiding an engineer through our many different components in order to build a custom machine. Fred was the man! His service to Sherline products was exemplary.

Beyond Fred’s service to Sherline, and of much greater value, was Fred the person. For many of our customers, Fred was the big guy with the big smile and hearty laugh that greeted them on the phone, or when they came to visit our shop. In fact, a significant percentage of the calls and visits that Fred received were from customers who just wanted to talk to Fred, or sit down and chat with him for a while. Many times these conversations had very little if anything to do with our product. Fred just had the kind of personality and the “gift of gab” that drew people in. He was easy to talk to and he was a good listener as well. He was a Viet Nam veteran and shared many stories with us and other Vets. In fact, he helped many a fellow Vet through some difficult times.
A few years ago, Fred suffered a stroke. While our dream, and his, was to come back to Sherline, it wasn’t meant to be. One complication lead to another and eventually the battle was lost. Fred’s smile, laughter, and wisdom will always fill our hearts. To those of you who knew him, we know that you feel the same.
