Winter 2016

Welcome to our last newsletter of the year. Lots of news to share with you, including details of our events, exciting news to share with two award recognitions and we are gearing up to our big tenth anniversary, when next September we are officially ten. The Oxford Children's Hospital is also ten years old in January, and we look forward to being part of their celebrations too as well as supporting their new £2m appeal to fund the building of a new family accommodation as well as joining in with helping Headway Oxfordshire's new appeal to fund the creation of the very first specialised neuro physio gym in the county.
From everyone involved with P2G, thank you so much for all your fab support over the years and to date, and we hope for your continued support.
From all the team at P2G, and we hope it's not too early now to say it, we wish you all a very merry peaceful Chrismas and a joyous, happy and healthy new year 2017.
Award Applause All Around
We were delighted to find out in October that we have been nominated within the OUH NHS Trust for their annual Staff Recognition Awards. Each year the Trust's annual awards is an opportunity for staff in the hospitals to nominate their colleagues, suppliers, supporters and partners in recognition of their hard work and outstanding dedication. Over 700 nominations were received.
We were nominated in 'Supporter of the Year' category and on November 23rd Andrew will attend an awards luncheon at the JR to receive a certificate on behalf of Play2Give - when our nominator will be revealed.
Further to this, we were thrilled to hear in November in a letter hand delivered to Andrew at the JR, that we have since been selected by the judging panel to the final 21 where we will be presented as a group with our award at the Oxford Town Hall.
Andrew, Dale, Teresa and Elaine look forward to attending the big bash at the Town Hall on December 7th when the big winners are revealed and we receive our award.
We were over the moon and chuffed to bethought of so highly by someone within the OUH Trust. We look forward to the event - and sharing the results in our next newsletter!
For a second year in a row we were delighted to be nominated and shortlisted in this year's Didcot Business & Community Awards (BACAs) which each year these prestigious awards the equivalent of Oscars of Didcot recognises and rewards excellence amongst local charities, community groups and businesses in and around the town.

We were delighted to be shortlisted in the 'Best Fundraising Award' category where we up against tough competition with a Secret Santa and Didcot Events.
We are delighted that the 2016 Winner of the Best Fundraising Innovation Award was...  Didcot Events. A much deserved win for this new team who organises the spectacular annual Christmas Street Fair, a 3-day food festival, gift & craft festival to much else. for the benefit of the town.

This annual event is organised by Didcot First, and was another wonderful evening interspersed with entertainment and performances from local acts, this year including dancing from talented Didcot Sixth Formers and Blewbury Brass Band.
Well done to all the shortlisted nominees and all winners including our very own supporters Go Green Taxis, SOLL Leisure, SOFEA and Newbury Building Society who all won awards on the night! A special mention to our special friends at Sainsbury's Didcot who was shortlisted with Newbury Building Society in the Best Volunteering Practice category for their work with  Play2Give in raising funds for CHOX at the John Radcliffe Hospital!
Get in a Spin for Play2Give with Pedal Power on November 26th
Our good friends at Willowbrook Leisure Centre, part of  Soll Leisure (Didcot BACA winner 2016), are hosting for another year a charity spinathon to raise money for Play2Give.

This year's event theme is 80s/90s - so if your feeling fit, your feeling energetic, and you feel you could get in a spin and pedal those legs hard, then please join in this Spinathon over 4-hours to help raise money for the Oxford Children's Hospital's tenth anniversary £2m appeal for 60 new family rooms and Headway Oxfordshire's neurological physiotherapy gym appeal.

People can sign up for a one-hour session or for all four. The event runs from 9.15am-1.15pm and sessions cost £5 each.

Marathon Duo Tackle  Half Marathon Raising Super Sums
Sunday October 9th saw the sixth annual half marathon take place in Oxford with 7,500 runners pounding the city streets. We were pleased to have three supporters sign up to support us and we were thrilled two of them - Matty Hambridge and Matt Ponting - completed the gruelling 13.1-mile challenge, which started and finished in the city centre. We also had another lovely lady who was all raring to go. Sadly she fell ill a few days before but she still raised an impressive £140! Both Matty and Matt were inspired to run for P2G and in particular for the Children's Hospital. For both gents, it was their first time, however they both throughly enjoyed the challenge and have already promised they will run again next year and to raise funds for us. We would like to say a massive thank you to both of them. Between them both guys raised an amazing £540 towards our £40k goal for CHOX.
Matty - who ran with his wife Joanne - finished in 2hrs 40m, whilst Matt finished in 2hrs 13m.
Lighting up sick children's day with  Sainsbury's with the joys of PlayStation
Veronica, Julie and Andrew meet Mitchell who loved the new PS4's
Back in the summer, Andrew helped our Sainsbury's Didcot friends to raise money for two new PlayStations in response to an appeal after some PS3 controllers from the teenage ward of CHOX.
With the store, we teamed up and together raised an amazing £655.55 from a Stars Wars in-store raffle, the store cafe held a fun quiz & fish 'n' chips supper, and proceeds from the colleague awards party raffle for Play2Give back in May along with a generous £100 donation from one supporter all helped to purchase two brand new PS4s with 4 games which Veronica and Julie along with Andrew delivered to Melanie's Ward at the end of September.
During their visit, they met young Mitchell, who was Playstation mad and had just had major surgery as he suffers from a form of cerebral palsy. For all three it was an awe-inspiring visit and Mitchell can be seen above giving the trio the thumbs up.
A huge thank you to all the Sainsbury's Didcot kind-hearted customers and colleagues who got involved, donated money and supported this appeal which certainly brought a smile to Mitchell's face and will to so many others that uses the consoles.

About Play2Give

£52.3k raised in 9 years!
Play2Give (P2G for short) was set up by Didcot's Andrew Baker in 2007 who teamed up with a small select group of friends to bring a football tournament for charity to life. Since its inception, and now as a volunteer-run fundraising organisation, P2G has proved to be hugely successful in continually growing year on year. Many thousands are raised each year for local selected charities, the Oxford Children's Hospital and Headway Oxfordshire. The football tournaments have been hailed by past teams as being the 'best tournament for charity in Oxfordshire', which is a real testament to the hard work and effort that all the team put in each year organising these annual events.
Since 2007 over £52,360 has been raised and donated to these causes to date, and we have now, after 9 years of support for the Children's Hospital, smashed £40k for the facility.

We are thrilled to be given the opportunity to sponsor a room in our name within the teenage ward at the hospital.  At a target of £40,000 to achieve this ambitious target, we are delighted to say we have smashed this special goal! The celebrations and room name unveiling will take place in the New Year. We can't of done this without YOU, our fantastic supporters, who have been part of this success story over the past nine years, so a very huge thank you for helping us achieve this long lasting special legacy within the Children's Hospital!

Our other main charity we support is Headway Oxfordshire of which we have donated over £4,400. Over the years we have also supported the John Radcliffe Paediatric Eye Fund, Bone Cancer Research (in memory of Alex Lewis from Wallingford), Footsteps, SpecialEffect and Heads Up amongst others.

We will also have a donation box for donations of new toys and gifts towards our Christmas Toy Appeal - Sleigh2Give 2016 - for the Children's Hospital.
Welcome Matthew
We welcome Matthew Norris, who joined the team, as Community Officer in July. Matt, who resides at Reading Uni and now volunteers at St Birinus School, is involved in helping coordinate organisation of community events particularly in Didcot. His ideas include a promise auction as well as helping work on a fun day in the parks. He is the young brother of Luke Norris, who is best friend to our founder, Andy Baker
Help Us Fund Oxfordshire's First Ever Neuro Physio Gym
From now our fundraising efforts for Headway will be focusing on helping the charity achieve a £10,000 target to build Oxfordshire's first ever Neurological physiotherapy gym which will benefit over 4,000 people.
For a moment put yourself in the place of these staggering 4,000 people in the county, who each suffer a brain injury, enough to fill all the seats on ten 747 Jumbo Jets. Having easy access to physical exercise and expert physiotherapy equipment close to home is vital to their recovery, so we are delighted to be supporting this very special appeal going forward where the proceeds we raise from funds over the coming months will go directly into this fund, as our own Andrew Baker knows only too well how essential physiotherapy as part of the Headway package, having benefit from physio equipment he uses on a regular basis.

Their aim is simple: To create the county's first ever state of the art neurological physio gym with equipment specifically designed for people with brain injuries, people like our own Andrew Baker who attends the Activity & Rehabilitation Centre weekly, and limited mobility at the newly refurbished centre based in Kennington, Oxford. Headway Oxfordshire will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2018 and our gala ball on September 29th 2017 will be the kick start to their big birthday celebrations.
