Winter/Spring 2017

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2017 from  Play2Give - and lots to be celebrated as well as all the latest on our fundraising successes, events and news. 2016 was a good year and 2017 is shaping up to be another busy, big and packed year and for us an extra special one as we celebrate turning ten! We was pleased to help through the local press launch the Oxford Children's Hospital's new £2million 10th anniversary fundraising appeal, which we aim to help towards with our own £10k in 10 campaign this year. Towards the end of last year saw us honoured by the local NHS Trust which runs the Children's Hospital in recognition of all our support in fundraising and we have just celebrated our own success with a very special lifetime legacy within the children's hospital! This year we have many fundraising plans - and our most special event, a black tie charity ball at end of September commemorating 10 amazing years. You can read more in this newsletter, or more at our website. Enjoy - and until next time. Love The P2G Team xxx
CHOX Celebrates £40,000 with Unveiling of Play2Give Room
The Play2Give Room - a patient room for teenagers - was unveiled on March 1st. Andrew cut the ribbon.
WE DID IT! After a decade long fundraising target of £40,000 set by the Oxford Children's Hospital we smashed our goal late last year and this was recently celebrated in early March at the hospital. Our goal was to raise £40k came about so that we could sponsor a room on the Melanie's Ward. After fundraising tirelessly through various events and initiatives since 2007, on 1st March we were pleased to see the unveil and official ribbon cutting to The P2G Room - which is a patient room for teens - on the ward. We celebrated with the hospital charity and the nurses, whilst also enjoying some cake and tea to mark our £40,000 achievement! We now aim to raise £10k in 10 and join the Children's Hospital's £10k Club. Our achievement and special room unveiling made front page and page 3 news of the Oxford Mail the next day.

Award Applause
On December 7th the OUH NHS Trust held their annual Staff Recognition Awards - the equivalent of the Oscars of the OUH world and shining a light on the 'heroes' within the 'NHS' locally. We were thrilled to not ony have been nominated in two categories in these prestigious awards.
We were nominated by the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Charitable Funds for 'Supporter of the Year' and 'Team of the Year', in thanks and recognition of our efforts in raising many thousands for the Children's Hospital and the JR Paediatric Eye Fund and other causes. We were delighted to be selected as a finalist in these awards and revealed on the night as the 'Bronze' winner for 'Supporter of the Year'.
Each year the Trust's annual awards is an opportunity for staff in the hospitals to nominate their colleagues, suppliers, supporters and partners in recognition of their hard work and outstanding dedication. We were one of 850 nominated!!

Fundraisers Get in a Spin and Raise Over £500!
A healthy hearty sum of over £535 was raised at the end of January by our good friends at Willowbrook Leisure Centre, part of  Soll Leisure (Didcot BACA winner 2016), when they opened up a Saturday to host a family fun day and a 90s spinathon to support Play2Give and kick started our 2017 appeal for the Oxford Children's Hospital.

Starry Night of Sporting Stars Raise Sporting Sum for P2G
Friday January 27th was a starry night of sporting stars as the Kassam Stadium played host to a galaxy of sporting greats, stars and unsung heroes all in one room as the 11th Oxfordshire Sports Awards took place. For a third year running, the Awards, organised by OxSpa, kindly supported P2G and through a collection on the night during the interval, a wonderful over £247 was collected by many of the generous 360 guests that turned out to celebrate the sporting talent within Oxfordshire. Guests included Olympic medal winners Andy Triggs Hodge, who won  Sportsman of the Year, and fellow rower Frances Houghton, who won Sportswoman of the Year. Andy's medal earned a record of its own - being able to order a taxi by itself!

Even Epilepsy Is No Barrier for Our Craig
Craig conquers last year's Monster Race
Even having and living with Epilepsy Is No Barrier to tackle 26.2-miles around the streets of the capital for our very own Craig Harris!

Craig, who helps out with Play2Give, is running the London Marathon in April to raise money for the Oxford Children's Hospital. Craig is aiming to raise a huge amount of £1,600 to help the kids in hospital. His inspiration comes from being part of P2G in which he has helped over many years particularly with at the footy tournaments and in competing in the Monster Run the past 2 years to raise funds!

His inspiration comes from  Andrew as a former patient of Chox as well as his cousin, and our football tournament co-ordinator Dale, whose daughter Mya has been treated by Chox medics since she was born over 14 years ago with Spina  Bifida.

Craig is putting in an incredible effort and training with many runs each day to help him make it through the epic 26.2-mile marathon around the capital which takes place on Sunday, April 23rd.

We think he is brilliant! And even more so seeing the fact he is himself epileptic and, like Mya and our chief Andrew, he too has had brain surgery! What a remarkable guy!

Well done Craig. Keep up the hard training!
Record Total For Headway
Andy presents Charlie Hayes with the cheque for £2,622.06 raised for Headway through 2016 fundraising efforts
We raised a record amount of money this year to aid brain injured survivors with rehabiltative support from a local support charity!

We have been supporting Headway Oxfordshire since our very own Andrew Baker was referred to the 28-year-old service based in Kennington, Oxford, in late 2011. Andy has been a regular weekly member of the Tuesday clan since 2012, joining the group after he begun volunteering in the admin office.

Oxfordshire's brain injury charity, Headway Oxfordshire - part of a national charity Headway UK - established in 1988 supports around 450 adults, like Andy, and their families and carers each year, and this year through a range of fundraising events including our summer football tournament and a fundraising evening in April, we have raised a record £2,622 which has not only helped fund the redevelopment of the Activity & Rehabilitation Centre (ARC) into more modern, purpose-built and 'chic looking' facilities but also support such as for games and therapy to aid the recovery and rehabilitation everyday of those who have suffered brain trauma to strokes.

On Friday last week the charity's annual Christmas Party was held for Kennington Village Hall with service users, carers, supporters, volunteers and staff and in front of 100 people gathered, they paid tribute to us and Andy where Andy was delighted to present a grand cheque totalising the record breaking super amount raised for the unit this year.

Alongside the £1,535 raised from the football tournament and £846 from April's fundraising party, money was also raised from a football match held in March at Oxford City Football ground which saw the Headway Heroes squad beat our team 4-3, Andrew walking the Oxford Fun Run on a blazing hot May Saturday, to a runner Vicky Knowlden running the Oxford Half Marathon in October.

To date our grand total raised for Headway Oxfordshire is an amazing £4,402 and to mark Andrew's fifth year of support from the charity, we hope to raise a further £1,000 in 2017 to mark five wonderful years of care and support that Andy has received.

About Play2Give

£55k raised since 2007!
The plaque on the door of The Play2Give Room at CHOX
Play2Give (P2G for short) was set up by Didcot's Andrew Baker in 2007 who teamed up with a small select group of friends - all volunteers - to bring a football tournament for charity to life. Since its inception, and now as a fundraising organisation, P2G has proved to be hugely successful in continually growing year on year. Many thousands are raised each year for local selected charities, the Oxford Children's Hospital and Headway Oxfordshire. The football tournaments have been hailed by past teams as being the 'best tournament for charity in Oxfordshire', which is a real testament to the hard work and effort that all the team put in each year organising these annual events.
Since 2007 over £55,000 has now been raised to date, and we smashed our £40,000 target for the Children's Hospital!

We were thrilled to be given the opportunity to sponsor a room in our name within the teenage ward at the hospital.  At a target of £40,000 to achieve this ambitious target, we are delighted to say we reached this special goal in late 2016! The celebrations and room unveiling recently took place. See left. We can't of done this without YOU, our fantastic supporters, who have been part of this success story over the past nine years, so a very huge thank you for helping us achieve this long lasting legacy within the Children's Hospital!

Our other main charity we support is Headway Oxfordshire of which we have donated over £4,570. Over the years we have also supported the John Radcliffe Paediatric Eye Fund, Bone Cancer Research (in memory of Alex Lewis from Wallingford), Footsteps, SpecialEffect and Heads Up amongst others.

Help Us Raise £10k in  Our 10th Birthday Year
2017 is a very special year for Play2Give. Like the Oxford Children's Hospital, we too celebrate our our tenth anniversary and we would like your help to make it a great year and to raise thousands more for local causes and local people.  P2G was born on September 13th 2007, and we have many ideas and plans to raise money and celebrate this big birthday. A special black-tie ball will be held at the end of September. (SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE)but there are also other plans in the pipeline, some examples further on below

As of January we were delighted to have been chosen by the team at Oxfordshire Guardian & The Oxford Paper as their Charity of the Year 2017. See more below.

Help Us Fund Oxfordshire's First Ever Neuro Physio Gym
From now our fundraising efforts for Headway will be focusing on helping the charity achieve a £10,000 target to build Oxfordshire's first ever Neurological physiotherapy gym in the voluntary sector which will benefit over 4,000 people.
For a moment put yourself in the place of these staggering 4,000 people in the county, who each suffer a brain injury, enough to fill all the seats on ten 747 Jumbo Jets. Having easy access to physical exercise and expert physiotherapy equipment close to home is vital to their recovery, so we are delighted to be supporting this very special appeal going forward where the proceeds we raise from funds over the coming months will go directly into this fund, as our own Andrew Baker knows only too well how essential physiotherapy as part of the Headway package, having benefit from physio equipment he uses on a regular basis.

Their aim is simple: To create the county's first ever state of the art neurological physio gym in the voluntary sector with equipment specifically designed for people with brain injuries, people like our own Andrew Baker who attends the Activity & Rehabilitation Centre weekly, and limited mobility at the newly refurbished centre based in Kennington, Oxford. Headway Oxfordshire will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2018 and our black tie anniversary ball on September 29th 2017 will be the kick start to their big birthday celebrations.

Charity of the Year 2017
In January we were delighted to receive an email of pleasant surprise. We had been chosen by the Oxfordshire Guardian and The Oxford Paper as their Charity of the Year 2017. We were nominated by their reporter, George Welch, and as part of this exciting scheme, they will be promoting P2G's work and fundraising efforts heavily in the paper regularly, which will help raise awareness much further on a wider scale across Oxfordshire. Staff will also help get involved in efforts and help raise money to help make P2G's 10th anniversary year extra special and memorable.
Thank You . . .
St Birinus School, Didcot - Andrew's former school - who raised another fantastic amount from a Non School Uniform Day in December which helped us in sight of our 10th Anniversary £10k appeal for the Children's Hospital. The grand amount came to £625.29! They are planning more fundraising in July including yet another Non Uniform Day and an  Activities Week to help with our special anniversary goal.
Sara Dixon and Jennie Featherstone of Didcot, directors of the Performing Angels & Stars Stage School, who completed 'Dry November' and in return raised lots of donations of 'Frozen' toys towards our biggest ever Sleigh2Give 2016 campaign - see Sleigh2Give opposite. Thank you Sara and Jennie and all their supporters.
Matt Hambridge of Witney, who is running the Reading Half Marathon on March 19th and has chosen Play2Give to receive the proceeds of his sponsorship he raises. Thank you Matty, and Best of Luck for your second half marathon in five months!

Donation from Youngmans Grooming  Oxford
Andy Williams of Didcot, who runs Bling Bling Windows, and raised a fantastic £130 by undertaking 'Movember' throughout December to aid our funds. Huge well done and thanks Andy!
To staunch supporter Lee Crook, of Sainsbury's Didcot, who is planning yet more fundraising to support our £10k in 10 Appeal.
Willowcroft School in Didcot who held a Christmas Jumper Day last December and raised over £218 towards our 'Sleigh2Give' initiative!
2016 Raises £4,136 for CHOX
£4,136 - that is the fantastic amount raised for Oxford's Children's Hospital through efforts and supporters in 2016 for Play2Give!

The proceeds raised of £4,136.52 came through a football match, football tournament, Easter raffle, collection tins, slims, to fun runs and half marathons - all making a great difference to the lives of young people in hospital and those with brain injuries across Oxfordshire.
This brings the total amount raised by P2G so far to an amazing £55,000 to date in almost a decade for local charities. A huge thank you to each and every single person and company for helping achieve this wonderful result!

2016's year for P2G ended on a high with the most successful and biggest 'Sleigh2Give' campaign to date )see above). In 2017 we aim to raise
£10k in 10 as part of our 10th anniversary appeal, and the plans will include a black tie celebratory charity ball in September.
