Oxfordshire Charity Awards 2016

Nominated for Oxfordshire Charity & Volunteer Awards 2016

Nominated for not one but two prestigious awards
Back in May our Andrew and Elaine was delighted to attend a prestigious evening celebrating the very best of Oxfordshire's charitable sector in a swish ceremony at Oxford Town Hall.
The 2016 Oxfordshire Charity and Volunteer Awards were held on May 11th . These annual awards celebrate and give well deserved recognition and awareness of the great work that charities, community groups and volunteers do each year making lives better across Oxfordshire, as the 'unsung heroes' of the 'charitable' sector, with awards presented by the Lord Mayor of Oxford and High Sheriff of Oxfordshire.
We were pleased to learn back in April that Play2Give had been nominated for not just one but two awards, 'Best Team of Volunteers' as well as the highest accolade of them all - 'Charity of the Year'. 2015 was our most successful year ever in terms of fundraising with over £13,530 raised and to make it into these prestigious awards nominated by supporters was the icing on the cake.
Charity of the Year and Best Team of Volunteers were hugely fought categories with a high number of high calibre nominees.  Sadly we didn't make the top 3 in either category, but to be just nominated and recognised at a packed Town Hall room of over 300 people was very special in itself.
A very big well done to all the volunteers and charities that won well deserved gongs. 'MyLifeMyChoice' won Charity of the Year 2015 and 'Aspire' won the Lifetime Achievement Award.

P2G hits the back of the net with record total for Headway

Andrew presents a £925 cheque to Charlie Hayes of Headway Oxfordshire raised from both events - our first cheque this year
An astounding amount of money was raised by our sixth and biggest fundraising party ever back in April that last month Andrew made Headway Oxfordshire in Kennington's day - and hundreds of brain injury survivors who rely enormously on the vital service that the organisation provides - by presenting them with our hugest single cheque ever, totalling £925.06!
The party alone raised a record £846 and, together with a share of the proceeds our football match, making up this amazing amount.

Big thank you to our evening sponsor Tom Houseman  Heating and Plumbing, Didcot Football Club for hosting, Greggs for donating 100 jam dougnuts for the night's entertainment of a very amusing doughnut eating contest, to Sainsbury's Didcot, and to Luke Norris and Emma  Collis for all their help in setting up the room and food prep, and of course Alan & Stuart of Utopia  Disco for a fabulous disco which certainly got most up on the dancefloor!

Our next event for Headway Oxfordshire together with the Children's Hospital is our mens' football tournament on Sunday July 3rd at Oxford City Football Club.

Sleet, Rain and Wind Didn't Deter The Fantastic Five

A fantastic five Play2Givers took on the mighty Monster Race back in April - and they sure didn't let dismal appaling weather far more than standard April showers - stand in their way! The Saturday saw a mudbath at Cornbury Park, venue of the beastly obstacle course, as heavy rain days before made the ground like a boggy mud pit all round as well as sleet, rain and nothing but winds but they didn't let that stop them from completing the Monster and raising £546 for the Oxford Children's Hospital! Well done to them all, pictured, we hope to have another team in the Spring Monster on 1st April 2017. A huge big thank you to Craig Harris, Tom Houseman, Andy Taylor, Maria Webb and Mark Bilby.

St Birinus School Shows Support

Didcot's St Birinus School has confirmed it is joining the bandwagon behind Play2Give through its support this summer with a Non School Uniform Day and other fun activities such as a penalty shoot out.   The school, where our Andrew Baker was once a pupil, was the start of Andrew's fundraising for the Oxford Children's Hospital Appeal back in 2003 when he was aged 14 and he lead and inspired efforts at the school - which resulted in St Birinus being a school in Oxfordshire to have raised the most amount of money out of any school in the county for the building of the Children's Hospital, which opened in 2007. They are dedicating their Non  Uniform Day on Friday July 1st which they hope to raise up to £1,000 towards our £40,000 goal and Andrew will speak to boys in assemblies the week of June 27th about our work. Thank you St Birinus.

Headway Hammers Play2Give in Charity Match

Both squads together after Headway emerged victorious 4-3
We held our second annual footy match back in March on a bitterly cold Saturday evening host by the wonderfully supportive Oxford City Football Club and it a thrilling nail biting 90-minute game it was too.  The champions of 2014 P2G Stars took on the Headway Heroes squad however unfortunately for P2G we couldn't hold onto retaining the cup but a very huge well done to the Headway side who, despite less men than us, won 4-3 by the second half. The match raised a fantastic £157.32 for the JR Children's Hospital and Headway Oxfordshire.

About Play2Give

£47k raised since 2007!
Play2Give (P2G for short) was set up by Didcot's Andrew Baker in 2007 who teamed up with a small group of friends to bring a football tournament for charity to life. Since its inception, and now as a voluntary-run fundraising organisation, P2G has proved to be hugely successful and, in particular, over the last 6 years, in continually growing and raising more money than ever. Many thousands are raised each year for local charities. The football tournaments have been hailed by past teams as being the 'best tournament for charity in Oxfordshire', which is a real testament to the hard work and effort that all the team put in each year organising these annual events.
Since 2007 £47,730 has been raised and donated to these causes to date, with over £37,280 of this to the Children's Hospital

As of late 2014, we are thrilled to be given the opportunity to sponsor a room in our name on the teenage ward at the hospital.  At a target of £40,000 to achieve this ambitious target, we are now only just £2,500 away from this very special total.  Please help us achieve this goal and very special legacy, as we continue to raise funds for the very latest medical equipment and facilities for the tens of thousands of children the hospital treat.

Our other main charity we support is Headway Oxfordshire. Over the years we have also supported the John Radcliffe Paediatric Eye Fund, Bone Cancer Research (in memory of Alex Lewis from Wallingford), Footsteps, SpecialEffect and Heads Up amongst others.

May the Force Be in Fundraising at Sainsbury's

Andrew in store with 9-year old Lucas Cox from Didcot, a CHOX patient
The force was certainly with Sainsbury's in  Didcot as our Andrew joined forces with the store to help raise funds for a special Playstation appeal featuring Star Wars characters as the focus. The store recently raffled off three life-sized cardboard cut outs from the popular film series in a bid to raise as much money as possible for Melanie's Ward - the teenage ward at the Children's Hospital. The store was acting after some PS3 controllers were stolen from the ward a few weeks ago, and more than enough has been raised to fund more controllers - in fact the store are hoping to have raised enough to buy a new console with controllers. More than £210 was estimated to have been raised.

Headway is our Charity of the Year

Andrew, right, present Charlie and Charlotte from Headway Oxfordshire with the 'Charity of the Year'
Congratulations to Headway Oxfordshire who was awarded 'Charity of the Year 2015/16' at our fundraising evening in April. Pictured are Charlie and Charlotte from the charity receiving the framed award from Andrew on the night. For Headway the award came as a huge and unexpected surprise.   A very worthy winner indeed for a service that has fought against county council cuts and funding reductions to still be running.   Other winners on the night was Lee Crook for raising over £910 for Play2Give since late 2014 and a festive Sleigh2Give sponsored walk. Lee won Supporter of the Year. Best Fundraising Event went to Willowbrook Leisure Centre in Didcot for their 'superheroes' spinathon last September and Corporate Supporters of the Year was Newbury Building Society for their unstinting sponsorship support to our football tournaments since 2007.

Sleigh2Give 2016

It may only be June but we are begin to think about yes Christmas because our Sleigh2Give campaign will soon be here - and this year we are on the scout for donations of new and unusued in good condition toys, games and puzzles which will be donated and handed out on the children's wards of the JR before Christmas.   After last year's successful response and 3 very heavy sackful of presents. If anyone would like to donate towards this appeal, email Andrew
