Nuts about (activated) Nuts!

Article by Chantelle Bazerghi

So what is all the fuss about activated nuts?

"I've been eating nuts for years and they taste just fine, so why should I be using activated nuts instead?"

A client asked me this last week and it got me thinking! Yes, there is a lot of hype around activated nuts, but does anyone really know why they are superior to your everyday raw nut?

For a start, nuts and seeds are wonderful! They are full of good oils, protein, antioxidants, fibre, vitamins A, B's, C and E, zinc, potassium, iron, folate, manganese, calcium and magnesium. All of these essential nutrients protect our heart, bones, keep our skin glowing and give us loads of energy! But not everyone can digest them well, in fact many people experience digestive discomfort or flatulence after eating only a handful of nuts. This type of reaction suggests that we are unlikely to be absorbing the wonderful nutrients properly.

This reaction is caused by the phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors found in nuts and seeds that prevent them from sprouting prematurely and helps to store all their amazing nutrients. But in turn makes our digestion work much harder to get access to those nutrients.

Soaking nuts and seeds in water and Celtic sea salt helps to neutralise these inhibitors and breaks down the phytic acid to begin the release of the beneficial nutrients and enzymes. This process makes them easier to digest and actually increases their nutritional value! As a bonus they also taste better! Activated nuts and seeds are less likely to taste bitter and heavy, but watch out as they can be very more-ish :)

Now what is a healthy amount of activated nuts and seeds?
A quarter cup of each as a snack or in a smoothie each day is ideal. I recommend rotating your nuts and seeds to ensure you are getting a variety of nutrients. I personally use  certified organic 2Die4 Live Foods nuts and seeds in my smoothie along with chia oil from The Chia Co and Melrose Golden Flaxmeal in addition to several other superfoods to start my day. Each of these
ingredients are available at Melbourne Natural Medicine Clinic. Pop into the clinic and given them a try.  Or you can contact reception on 03 9686 2566 to order over the phone and add to your next order.

I have shared my delicious Superfood Smoothie recipe below.
