November 2014 update from the Melbourne Natural Medicine Clinic team
"Keep your face to the sun and you will never see the shadows."
- Helen Keller

Summer is nearly here! And that means Christmas is fast approaching... While not everyone enjoys the really warm weather, here at MNMC we love that there is so much fresh produce around at the moment! Perfect to use in those morning smoothies and lunch time salads. Our favourite smoothie recipe this week is Ange's Detox Skin Smoothie, courtesy of our own Naturopath, Angela Smith!

The best place to get your fruit and veggies is at your local market.  Not only is everything super fresh, it's cheap and your grocer is knowledgeable about what is in season. If you go later in the day, you can also get some incredible bargains!

It is always best, where possible, to purchase organic produce. Since it is free from pesticides and other nasty chemicals, this helps with reducing the toxic load placed on our bodies. Organic produce is generally more expensive, so if you are on a budget leading up to Christmas, there are smarter ways to shop to ensure that you are getting more bang for your buck!

Certain fruits and vegetables are more contaminated with pesticides. These are known as the Dirty Dozen. Pesticides are toxic by design, with some research suggesting that they are linked to a wide range of health conditions. Where possible, it is best to spend a few extra dollars on purchasing organic varieties of these fruits and vegetables. On the contrary, the Clean Fifteen refers to produce that is least contaminated by pesticide use. So while organic produce is preferred, it is not as necessary for these particular foods. Check out our Facebook page for further information.

Farmer's Markets have really increased in popularity in recent years. Not sure where your nearest Farmer's Market is? Click here to search. Alternatively, next time you come in to the clinic for an appointment, why not visit Queen Victoria Market and pick up the freshest fruits and vegetables? The Produce section of the market is open Tuesdays & Thursdays (6am - 2pm), Fridays (6am - 5pm), Saturdays (6am - 3pm) and Sundays (9am - 4pm). Located only 3 blocks away from MNMC, it's a short stroll before/after your appointment. If driving, we'd suggest parking near the clinic as the roads closer to Queen Victoria Market can be quite busy. Just remember that you will need to carry everything back to the car though!

Probiotics -
Replenishing the Fragile Eco System

Bacteria are critical for human survival, living both within  and on your body. It may sound unappealing, but having the right types of bacteria in the right balance can help your body function optimally.

There are billions of different types of bacteria in your body, all playing different roles to keep your health in check. When these bacteria are out of balance, it can make you susceptible to digestive symptoms and conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); as well as having an impact on immunity, allergies, metabolism, and skin health.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that have positive effects on health. The right probiotic can bring your body back into balance.
Benefits of a Good Probiotic
The average Western diet is not optimal to keep your bacteria in balance.

You need a good balance of beneficial bacteria to keep your immune and digestive systems healthy, as well as playing a role in many other functions in your body.

In order to achieve and maintain this healthy balance, use a good quality, high potency probiotic supplement.

Scientific studies support the therapeutic use of specific strains of probiotics for different conditions. For the best results, it is important to use the right strain to match your health concerns.

The right strain will help your body to replenish and grow your own unique strains of bacteria that only you have. Some strains of probiotics have the ability to influence your digestive flora for a more harmonious balance.
Getting It Right
There are many different probiotic supplements available today; your Practitioner can help select a quality probiotic supplement  just for you.

Probiotic drinks, yoghurts, and even probiotic lollies  may not contain beneficial bacteria at a therapeutic dose, and  nor do they provide specific probiotic strains to target your individual health needs.

A Practitioner prescribed probiotic will  provide high strength, therapeutic doses of bacteria that will be beneficial in managing your health.
For more information on probiotics and how we can help you with digestive concerns, book in for a consultation with one of our practitioners today!

Salmon Wasabi Burgers

These burgers are very spicy! If you are not a fan of spicy food (or are making these for children) it may be best to leave the wasabi powder out or only add a little bit. This recipe is courtesy of the Elana's Pantry.
 - 450g skinless salmon fillet
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled and minced
- 1/4 cup fresh spring onions, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup coriander, finely chopped
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1/2 cup blanced almond flour
- 1 teaspoon of sea salt
- 1/4 cup wasabi powder
- 1 tablespoon of water
- Coconut oil for frying

Rinse salmon, pat dry and cut into 1/4 inch cubes. In a large bowl  combine salmon, ginger, spring onions, coriander, eggs, lime juice, almond four and salt. In a small bowl combine wasabi powder and paste. Mix wasabi paste into salmon mixture. Form batter into 5cm patties with your hands. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Sauté patties in batches until golden brown, 6 - 8 minutes per side. Best served on a fresh green garden salad, or even in a wholegrain bun.

Natural Sunscreen!

Now that the Summer weather is (nearly) here, it's more important than ever to ensure we are protecting our skin from the sun's harmful rays when we are outside.

While the sun is a great source of Vitamin D, we do need to look after our skin.

Today, we are far more conscious about what we put into our bodies. Sometimes however we forget about things that  we put on our bodies! Our skin is the body's largest and fastest growing organ! Since it is porous, it absorbs everything we put on it.

Most sunscreens contain hidden additives, such as
chemical UV absorbers, nanoparticles, titanium dioxide and synthetic preservatives. However Eco Tan Natural Coconut Sunscreen is free from all these nasties!

Eco Tan Natural Coconut sunscreen:

- Smells divine! It's a tropical coconut scent and will having you thinking you're on a desert island.

- Suitable for your face and body. It's non-greasy formula does not feel heavy like regular sunscreens.

- Is skin tone colour. This means that it blends easily and will not give that ghost white colour to your skin.

- Water resistant for up to 3 hours.

- Australian made from natural products!

- Provides UVA and UVB protection, meaning that it's suitable for everyday use and all day in the sun (as long as you do re-apply).

- Containing Vitamin E, jojoba oil and rosehip oil, your skin will feel nourished!
