Spring 2014 update from Melbourne Natural Medicine Clinic
Flowers & Fashion

"Spring is nature's way of saying, 'Let's party!"
- Robin Williams (1951 - 2014)

As the flowers are blossoming and the bright coloured fashions are on show at the races, Spring is in full swing! Many different fruit and vegetables are coming into season, so try to purchase these products when they're at their best and most flavoursome. Our featured recipe on Facebook this week is "Not Your Typical" Asparagus Stir-Fry which highlights the best of Spring produce.

While there are many positives associated with this time of year, Spring isn't everyone's favourite season. Hay fever affects lots of people and makes the next few months very difficult. Read our article below for helpful tips on reducing your symptoms and to see how our Naturopaths can assist you with hay fever management.

Here at MNMC we are big believers in food as medicine. Our super popular range of organic teas are great and can be used to assist with a variety of conditions. The Digestive Tea (our favourite!) contains a variety of herbs to support optimum digestion and is caffeine free. Other teas in the range include: Calming, Detox, Breast Feeding, Pregnancy, Menopause, Morning Wellness, Skin Glow and Immunity. You can sample a selection of teas when you are next in the clinic!

Also, keep a look out on our Facebook page for information on our upcoming Food As Medicine information session.

You can either present the voucher next time you are in the clinic or mention it when placing a phone order and the lovely girls at reception will deduct it off your account.

Hay Fever -
Hate Spring No More!

Many people suffer in silence from allergies but hay fever is not something that you simply have to put up with! It is possible to manage your allergies naturally - and we're here to help!

Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a common condition during the Spring and Summer months due to increased grass and flower pollen in the air. Common hay fever symptoms include sneezing, sinus congestion and itchy eyes. It's not fun at all! But there are things that our practitioners can do to assist you through this time of year and to ensure that you can enjoy the lovely weather outside.

Hay fever (which is caused by an allergy) occurs due to an immune imbalance. Pharmaceutical medications may help to reduce symptoms but do not address the underlying cause.

Herbs and Nutrients to Maintain Allergies Naturally
The following herbs and nutrients may help to manage your hay fever symptoms naturally, as well as rebalancing your immune function:

*Perilla (Perilla frutescens) - A herb that is beneficial in the treatment of hay fever, asthma and sinusitis. It can be used to reduce the symptoms of allergic reactions, particularly of the upper respiratory tract.

*Albizia (Albizia lebbeck) - The anti-allergy properties of the herb albizia are helpful for hay fever, asthma, sinus congestion and allergic skin conditions such as eczema and hives. It also helps to strengthen the lungs and clear mucus.

*Quercetin - A bioflavonoid vitamin that is used for acute or chronic allergies such as hay fever, hives, and asthma. It is also a great antioxidant!

*Zinc - Plays a very important role in regulating the immune system and is a common deficiency. Optimal zinc levels are crucial in any allergy treatment.

Depending on the severity and type of symptoms you are suffering, our practitioners will be able to advise the best supplements suited for you.

How to Manage Your Hay Fever Symptoms
To help balance your immune system and help you manage your hay fever symptoms, follow these simple recommendations:

*Consider a natural supplement for allergy relief.

*Avoid any foods that are known allergens.

*Increase fruit and vegetable intake, particularly those bright in colours, such as berries and capsicum, as they contain high levels of antioxidants and nutrients.

*Avoid processed and refined foods that may contain preservatives and additives.

*Drink at least 2 litres of filtered water per day to keep the body hydrated.
