Dear Friends and District 98 Constituents,

I hope your new year is off to a great start!  I am in full swing at the North Carolina General Assembly.  Thank you for your support in making this dream a reality.

Below is a quick update for your review.  If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me at john.bradford@ncleg.net or call me at 919.733.5828.

HOUSE BILLS PRIMARY SPONSORED / CO-SPONSORED:

Eminent Domain: House Bill 3 (HB3), Co-Sponsored by Representative John R. Bradford, III

Status: Passed the NC House, Crossed over to NC Senate for consideration.
HB3 is an act that offers a constitutional amendment removing the language “public benefit” from the current law and gives land owners the right to a court trial to determine fair property values for properties taken by eminent domain.  HB3 reduces municipalities’ ability to exercise eminent domain unless it is for a defined “public use.”  HB3 is a way to further reduce government overreach.  If HB3 passes the NC Senate and obtains the Governor’s approval, then this will appear on the next election ballot for all North Carolinians to ultimately decide.

Military Veterans Special Plate: House Bill 5 (HB5), Co-Sponsored by Representative John R. Bradford, III

Status: Passed First Reading (01/29), Sent to Committee
HB5 is an act to reauthorize the Division of Motor Vehicles to produce a special registration plate for military veterans and remove the requirement that the division must receive a minimum number of applications before issuing the plate.

Restore School Calendar Education Purpose Waiver, House Bill 9 (HB9), Co-Sponsored by Representative John R. Bradford, III

Status: Passed First Reading (01/29), Sent to Committee
HB9 is an act to restore the School Calendar Educational Purpose Waiver to provide flexibility to accommodate specific programs for a reasonable educational purpose as recommended by the house study committee on education innovation.
