Our September 2016 Newsletter!

Dear Parents,

We hope that all of our kids (and you!) have had a smooth transition into the new school year and that they will continue to strive and succeed!

I wanted to thank you for helping us increase your child's educational opportunities over the summer. Whether you read every night with your child, took them to the park and outdoors, visited the zoo, played board games, attended therapies, etc., it made a difference!!!

With September here, our number of nice, long sunny days is decreasing, so try to enjoy as many of them outside as possible! I had one parent suggest
that we do field trips and activities together so that we may get to know each other better while having fun with our kids. If you'd like to participate or have any ideas, please email me at

Thank you once again for your continued efforts!

Claudia Mármol, M.A., BCBA

Important Reminders

*We continue having late pick-ups and late cancellations. Therefore, our "Late pick-ups/Cancellation/No show" contract will be effective immediately.

*We started using the Parent Observation room as a therapy room. In the upcoming weeks, we will let you know how you can observe your child's session via our video camera (*You have to be present at HTW in order to watch the session).

*Please bring any snacks/drinks and change of clothes for your kids so we can store them and use them during their scheduled sessions.

*Helping our staff to grow professionally and continue to learn is one of our top priorities. That is why our therapists are undergoing an intensive ABA training so that they can become certified as Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT's). Our analysts will also be attending the annual conference, Florida Association for Behavior Analysis (FABA), to be held from September 14th-17th, for continuing education credits. We will let you know if we need to cancel any sessions.

Our ABA article of the month

During our Team meeting this month, we discussed the following research article, titled: The Effects of Three Types of Noncontingent Auditory Stimulation on Vocal Stereotypy in Children with Autism, written by Saylor, Sidener, and Reeve (2012).

The study evaluated the effects of 3 types of Noncontingent auditory stimulation: 1) Music, 2) White noise, and 3) Recordings of the child's own vocal stereotypy, on the Vocal Stereotypy in 2 children with Autism. Vocal Stereotypy (also known as Echolalia or Scripting) was defined as any noncontextual vocalization made by the 2 participants.

Similar results were obtained for both participants- high levels of Vocal Stereotypy during Baseline, substantial decreases to near-zero levels in the music & self conditions, and only a transitory decrease in the white noise condition.

Given that Vocal Stereotypy tends to occur at high rates during unstructured time in children with autism, we have put these procedures to the test. So far, the auditory stimulation of playing music has helped decrease our client's scripting.

We will continue reading research articles and sharing our stories. If you would like for us to discuss a particular topic, please let me know.
