     TAKING ROOT March 2014

From the President

March 4th. This is the only date on the calendar that is a command: "March forth!"

On March 4th 2014, the Alliance for Community Trees, or ACTrees, hosted the first ever Urban Forest Council Steering Committee meeting. Council Executive Secretary Betty Shimo and I participated and represented the NYSUFC. Other participating state councils included those of NC, PA, WI, CO, and CA. These state urban forestry councils, while all organized a little differently, have something in common. They are all considered models of inclusivity and effectiveness.

The meeting affirmed for me that our Council is part of a larger urban forestry movement that could benefit from more cross-pollination and sharing of ideas. We discussed and confirmed the 2014 action items, including a nationwide survey of state urban forestry councils to be delivered to all 50 states later this month.

I came away from the meeting inspired and ready to "March forth" into a future of greater collaboration among the state councils in order to more effectively advocate for urban and community forestry. —Andy Hillman, Andrew.Hillman@Davey.com
