The Halloween Garden by Jennifer Allen Poe
Once upon an autumn dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over mounds of dried leaves rendered like so many times before-
While I plodded heavily hoeing, suddenly there came a blowing
As of some wind gently flowing, flowing thru my garden door
“Tis some soft breeze” I muttered, “blowing thru my garden door-
Only this and nothing more.”
Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December;
And each separate dying annual wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had dreamt to harrow
From my shed of sorrow – sorrow for the lost hellebore-
For the lost lenten rose whom the Greeks named ellebore-
Scorched dead for evermore.
And the crispy, parched dry rustling of each purple sepal
Drilled me- filled me with fantastic guilt often felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
“Tis some fertilizer or plant food I need to use more-
Some worm casting or Miracle Grow in my garden more-
This I can’t ignore.”
Presently my determination grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
St. Fiacre, said I “Truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and the drought was so entrapping,
And so inconstantly I came splashing, splashing my garden floor,
That I was neglectful” – here I confessed the score;-
Absolved, I determine to do more.
Deep into daydream I was peering, long I stood there wondering, endearing,
Undaunted, dreaming dreams no gardener dared to dream before;
Intent, unswerving I was unbroken, and the hose was set to soak in,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word “hellebore.”
I shouted, “Grow dammit!” and watered even more-
Merely this and mulch some more.
Back into the garden churning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I felt a yearning somewhat louder than before.
“Surely,” said I, “Surely that is someone at my picket fence,
Let me see, then, who’s come hence, my garden to explore-“
Let my heart be still a moment and this day adore-
‘Tis Mary Lou Heard Tour day once more.
