Two R's Two E's

This is their story as I know it.

There is a unique and very beautiful garden that sits on a bluff facing east located in Huntington Beach.  It was purchased by its current owners in the early 1990’s.  She is a fabulous Mom, Grandmother, “do-it-yourselfer”, homemaker, and gardener who collects seeds from passing flowers for next year’s garden planning.  He is a former executive for a large utility company who is the one of the best “go-fer’s” around, and I know “go-fer’s”.  Upon his retirement, she let her lawn man go and gave hubby “the promotion”.  They are High School sweet hearts.  He calls her, “My Bride” and has fallen out of trees for her, literally.

The property was part of an estate from a former grower—I’m thinking it was orchids.  It was the last parcel of land on the market.  All around the little “farm” house, two phases of condominiums had been built.

Beyond the farm house, there were numerous buildings included in the sale with two greenhouses as part of the package.  Among the buildings were storage sheds bigger than our standard-sized garages and a bunk house.  Asphalt was everywhere.  There are usually “before” photos during Tour time and from them you are able to visualize all the hard work that went into making this place magical.  She laid the brick paths herself.

There is a working water wheel with a pond that attracts wildlife grandkids included!

Among the many plantings, her collection of roses is pretty incredible all through the year.  The clematis have been photographed for a clematis grower’s guide.  Local nurseries know of their variety of trees, deciduous, evergreen, and fruiting.

It is easy to get lost while attempting to find their home & garden the first time.  “Keep going in, it’s there” is what is told to gardening enthusiasts.

Most importantly, they are a wonderful team and family always come first.  Their garden has been a feature of numerous gardening articles, is always a show stopper during tour season and is carefully manicured by these “true gardeners”.  It is a gathering place for many holidays, a place for competitive family tournaments of all kinds of lawn sports including volleyball, croquet, etc.  Two years ago, their first grandson promised his bride vows of matrimony here in front of all their family and friends and I was lucky enough to be a part of it (the bridal party all looked like they were 13!).
