SMILE can now offer the below four programmes to your service users for FREE! These programmes are being offered fully funded in partnership with Hertfordshire Adult and Family Learning Service. You can book onto any of these for a group of up to 10 people by emailing smile@hcpa.info.

1.5 hours per week for 5 weeks!

SMILE horticulture sessions can include working both indoor and outdoor on various seasonal gardening activities. These sessions are tailored to meet the needs of each individual and include;

  • Learning about horticulture and wildlife
  • Sensory interaction
  • Using herbs
  • Potting plants for display

Individuals will be taught each part of a horticultural process. e.g. learning about seed sowing, pricking and planting out and the after care required for any produce grown. These sessions aim to increase independence, encourage a sense of personal achievement and help raise self-esteem.

2 hours per week for 5 weeks!

Groups of learners can plan and design their outdoor areas/allotments from scratch. They will be supported to plan the resources required, ensure accurate measurements are taken and using IT will create detailed plans.
Designs can be anything that the group agree, e.g. sensory garden area, seating area, raised bedding, straw bale planting, ponds or allotments.
The learners will then take part in the construction of the design, they will gain knowledge in construction skills and be fully supported by the tutor to be as involved as they can. Individuals will then learn how to maintain the area.
By the end of the programme, learners will have created a useful outdoor space to their own requirements which meets their own needs and will hold the required knowledge and skills to upkeep it.

1 hour per week for 5 weeks! (for learning disability services)

The Healthier You package is particularly beneficial for those who would like to learn more about how to adapt healthier lifestyles.
The sessions are classroom based and teach about the human body, importance of nutrition, balanced diets and physical activity. By the end of the programme, learners will have created meal planners and exercise plans that they can continue to utilise following the programme.

2.5 hours per week for 5 weeks!

SMILE work in partnership with the Wheelchair Dance Sport Association (WDSA UK). Our qualified tutors can support groups of individuals to learn dance techniques in their wheelchairs - classes are suitable for individuals in powered or manual wheelchairs and those who are not in wheelchairs can join in too! WDSA UK hold regional and National competitions in Wheelchair dance sport, so if following the lessons, an individual wishes to compete in these, SMILE can provide the support to make this happen. Wheelchair dancing is accessible to anyone, with no boundaries in terms of age or level of ability.
