Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership

Printable version
The Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership was established in the Fall of 2002 to respond to the legal issues impacting the health of low-income children and adults.  It is a collaboration among multiple local medical and legal organizations and is available free of charge for children and families with legal issues that are affecting their health and well-being.

The Medical Legal Partnership can address issues such as housing, foreclosures, immigration, education, public benefits, SSI, family law, advanced directives and payday loans. Examples of services include providing a ssistance to secure income supports for food insecure families, access to school services for special needs children, child support, utility shut-off protection during cold winter months and landlord/tenant issues.  Criminal and liability issues are not accepted.

The procedures for referral are simple.  If you identify a family, refer them to the Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership at the number below.  They will be scheduled for an intake assessment.  If relevant issues are identified, the case will be referred to either a Jacksonville Area Legal Aid attorney or one of dozens of pro bono attorneys.

The Partnership for Child Health is collaborating in this endeavor.

Success Stories:
  • Client referred from JaxHats. She has an 18 year old son with cerebral palsy. He is in a wheelchair and is non-verbal. She requested assistance to obtain a guardian advocacy in order to help her with obtaining Section 8 housing. NFMLP contacted a pro bono attorney who was able to help immediately.  The client is now able to proceed with her section 8 housing.

  • A caseworker from Florida Department of Health referred a patient to NFMLP for educational assistance. The patient was an eight year old child who was removed from school because of his behavioral outbursts during class time. NFMLP wrote a letter on the mother’s behalf to the school requesting a psychological evaluation for the child. The school responded by providing the necessary and proper evaluations
