October 2014 is proclaimed
Down Syndrome Awareness Month in Lancaster!

On October 1st, LDSA was in the news! The merchandiser ran this article about the proclamation on the front page (at least in some areas)!  The recognition this brings to Down syndrome awareness is fantastic!  Please check our website where we will post the entire article.

Training for Lancaster's First Responders!
We are partnering with the Excentia and the First Responder Training facility to offer training to our first responders on interacting in our community with people with intellectual delays and disabilities.  The training will be taking place March 25th and will be open to all first responders in Lancaster County!i

LDSA, CDS, and YOU!
As some of you may have noticed - there are actually 2 Down syndrome groups functioning in Lancaster and I wanted to take some time to explain why and to talk a little bit more about each group.

Celebrate Down Syndrome (CDS) has been around Lancaster for a LONG time!  They began as a small support group in the basement of the Hempfield Methodist church and have grown and changed over the years to what they are now.   Currently, CDS focuses on the social events and advocacy events for people with Down syndrome and their loved ones.  They do a Christmas party, a summer picnic, and recently sponsored an awareness day at the Lancaster Barnstormers.

Lancaster Down Syndrome Advocates (LDSA) is new - we've been around less than a year.  We focus on advocacy - providing educational opportunities to people with Down syndrome, their loved ones and the community to help create a more inclusive community and allow people with Down syndrome to have their needs met.  We have sports clinics set up, we hold monthly educational meetings for families, and we are working on a project with the Lancaster County First Responders to offer education on interacting in the community with people who have intellectual disabilities.

LDSA was not created to compete with CDS - we have a very different mission than CDS and we fully support their mission and what they do.  Ideally, these two groups would work together to support each other's missions and, while we have not been very strong on that front, just being so focused on our own missions, we hope to rectify this going forward!  I hope this helps to clarify any questions you may have had!

Upcoming Events:
October 17th - LDSA Town Hall Meeting - Developing a Special Needs Plan
October 18th - first LDSA Soccer Clinic class with Rossi (every Sat for 4 weeks)
November 14th - LDSA Gymnastics clinic at Accelerations
November - Date TBD - LDSA Town Hall Meeting - Sleep Issues
December 6th - CDS Panake and Pajama Christmas party
January 31st - LDSA 321 Dance!

Upcoming Events involving LDSA and YOU!

Soccer & Gymnastics Registration is now available on our website (click here)!
There will be 2 gymnastics classes that you can check out this year (October 3rd and November 14th) and then we will be having them on the First Friday of the month starting in January!  With enough interest, we will up that to twice a month!  Come check out the gymnastics for just $3 per class!  There will be a maximum of 10 people per class.  Classes will be held at Accelerations Gymnastics in Lititz.

Soccer will be weekly for 4 weeks, but the first round will be a come and try it out session.  You can sign up for all 4 classes for $10, or just do individual classes for $5 each.  The dates for this are October 18 & 25 and November 1 & 8 and the time is 4-5pm at the Nook.  There will be a maximum of 10 people per class.

Thank you to Coach Rossi at the Nook (who held a raffle to raise money for us), The Lancaster Polo Club (who are donating part of their proceeds from the Chili cook off) and our generous sponsors for the Golf tournament for allowing us to raise the money to offer this to our families!

LDSA will have a table at the Excentia Annual Harvest 5k!
Another group we partner with for our meetings is Excentia (and S. June Smith).  Excentia provides us with many of our speakers!  The 5k is happening on November 8th and LDSA will be there too!  Find more information and register here!

LDSA will be holding our First Annual 321 Dance! on January 31st from 5:30-8:30pm.
What is a 321 Dance, you might ask?  It's alot like an awareness walk with teams and fundraising awards, but instead of being a walk, it's a dance.  This event is through the NDSC and you can learn more information about the 321 Dance! and the NDSC here.  Mike the DJ is going to play our tunes, we will have a Toddler Play area, facepainting, magicians, door prizes, a banner contest, and much more fun!  Please save the date - it will be a night to remember!

LDSA is also sponsoring a monthly play date at Accelerations Gymnastics in Lititz!
Join us on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 9-11 for a play date! Accelerations has a great, family friendly, tumbling area and the cost for you is just $3 per child!  Stay tuned for information on the first play date!

Upcoming Meetings:
October Town Hall Meeting - Special Needs Planning - 10/17 (click here for more details)
November Town Hall Meeting - Sleep Issues - Date and location TBD

New Parent Outreach:
We have new parent information delivered to Woman and Babies and available to be delivered to Lancaster Regional.  We have also delivered informational books to Maternal Fetal Medicine and several OB and Pediatrician offices.

Volunteers needed!!
Do you LOVE what we are doing?  We would LOVE to have to you help us!  We don't need you to donate hours and hours of your time - we know everyone is busy, but we really could use the help on some of our upcoming projects!  Even an hour a month could help us tremendously!  Please email us at contact@lancasterdsa.org if you are interested in helping us in any way!

LDSA works on the concept of partnering with other community organizations in order to bring the best resources to you!  We would like to thank our partners because they allow us to do MUCH more than we could ever do ourselves!
