Community Spotlight:

Celebrate Down Syndrome
This month we'd like to Celebrate Down Syndrome. This group began many years ago as the Support Group of the Susquehanna Valley. The current president, Christine Hewitt, was introduced to the world of Down syndrome through her participation in the buddy minstry at her church and, after several years of volunteering with CDS, ironically now has a niece who has Down syndrome. This team has a gift for creating memorable social events that include every detail!

At LDSA, we enjoy working with the current members of CDS because we can team up from two different angles of advocacy and really make this community a better place for people with Down syndrome.

You can check out their website at www.celebrateds.org and their facebook page at www.facebook.com/celebrateds

Once again, Celebrate Down Syndrome is planning their pancake breakfast Christmas party and you can find out more information on their facebook page!

Dutchland Rollers:
This may appear to be an odd spotlight, but we LOVE what the Dutchland Rollers do!  They are a non-profit roller derby organization that likes to give back to the community.  Each home match, they choose an organization to which they will donate a portion of their ticket sales.  They have given back to many worthy groups and we are very excited that for their November 7th meet, they have chosen Lancaster Down Syndrome Advocates!

LSDA Spotlight:

Elizabethtown College Partnership

Once again, we are partnering with the education department at Elizabethtown College in order to allow the students hands on experience with children with intellectual disabilities.  We do this by providing speakers to talk with the students and partnering groups of students with families.  The students get to experience the children in their home life and ask, in a safe environment, any questions they may have.   We are starting off the second set of students through this partnership and the results from the first round were life changing for both the students and families.

Pictured above are the 3 students currently working with Phoebe. Two are early education majors and one is a secondary education major and they are creating lessons to work with Phoebe to see how she learns best and how they can best assess her and determine her needs.

Partnership with The Arc of Lancaster
We have teamed up with the Arc of Lancaster to help them work on some much needed projects in the community.  We have very similar mission statements and goals for inclusion in the Lancaster community, so the partnership only makes sense!  We look forward to bringing our desires for this community to life with the help of the Arc!
