Dear Friends,

We are thoroughly enjoying summer here at EVYP! There are only a few weeks left of our Summer Program; below we’ve featured two of the trips our students have taken. Along with our Summer Program trips and college/career development, we are busy preparing for the fall. Applications for our tutoring and Fall Program open today (August 1st). In addition, be on the lookout for our site-based outreach table in Avondale. See below for more information.

Finally, we have a Student Impact Story from one of our juniors; Luis Ortiz. Luis Ortiz has been involved with EVYP for a number of years; read more about his accomplishments and his commitment to EVYP below.

Summer Program Trip: Chicago Shakespeare Theater

During our second week of Summer Program, students ventured to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater to tour the theater and participate in a Q&A session with a stage manager, costume design manager, and sound engineer.  Students were also able view the construction site for a third theater space. EVYP toured backstage and got a sneak peek into the costume workshop, props workshop, and wig workshop. During the Q&A, students learned about the skills necessary to run a successful theater company; these ranged from marketing and law to creative design and performance.

Summer Program Trip: Columbia College Chicago

Students also journeyed to Columbia College Chicago. Students participated in an admissions presentation and campus tour, in which they explored course requirements and careers within advertising/public relations, art & design, creative writing, fashion studies, interactive arts & media, and photography. The tour went through the fashion design, music, and film departments. The students were particularly excited by the amount of equipment and resources available to Columbia College students such as cameras, sewing machines, and recording equipment. Our students even got to witness networking in action when a cinematography major connected with the music major tour guide and agreed to shoot a music video together!

Student Impact Story: Luis Ortiz

Luis Ortiz is a rising senior at Taft high school. He has participated in EVYP's high school program since his freshman year. Luis is one of EVYP's most outgoing students. He has excellent communication skills and wins many over with his bright, positive, and energetic personality. Despite being influenced by friends who have been able to make good money without college degrees, Luis is interested in combining his natural skills in salesmanship and entrepreneurship with a degree in business.

He attended EVYP’s spring break college tour and was inspired by programs at UW-Madison, Cornell College, and a meetup with Posse students. He is currently one of EVYP's Posse nominees. He has also been accepted to the Youth Leadership Institute (YLI), a highly competitive program through the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. He will be attending the three-day YLI program at the University of Chicago at the end of July.
