As I am settling into my new role as Executive Director, great things are happening here at EVYP! With the start of the 2015-2016 school year we've hosted our first college workshop and the high school and tutoring programs are well underway. We are also bringing back our monthly 'Student Spotlight'. This month we caught up with Kim, an EVYP senior.
We are excited to welcome Jenn Romero to the EVYP family. She started working with us over the summer and has just begun her full-time role as the new Program Coordinator. Also, make sure you mark your calendars for #GivingTuesday. We look forward to this event every year and enjoy taking part in this global fundraising event!
Stephanie Baki, Executive Director
In 2015, 100% of EVYP seniors were accepted into a 4-year college or university.
College Workshop, Fall 2015
We recently had over 20 students attend our Fall College Workshop hosted by Program Manager, Julia Gerasimenko. Divided into two sessions, our morning session for freshmen and sophomores focused on creating and updating five year plans and setting goals around professional development. The afternoon session for juniors and seniors focused on career exploration. Each session included a chance for students to create FSA IDs to use in the new log in system for the FAFSA. These workshops are always a great chance for our students to work towards their college goals as well as catch up with their old EVYP friends!
Kim Berger, Student Spotlight
Kimberly Berger has been with EVYP since her Junior year. She is sharing her artwork which was exhibited in the 2015 All City Art Exhibit. The photograph is titled "The Beautiful Unknown Reflection". For the past few years, Kim has had a passion for photography. Recently, she decided to step out of her comfort zone and try more abstract photography. Using the bathroom window sill, she used old marbles and began experimenting with different lighting, reflections, angles and colors.
Jenn Romero, Program Coordinator
Jenn joined EVYP as the Program Coordinator in August 2015. With a passion for youth engagement, Jenn previously worked as a music teacher and aftercare program coordinator at a Catholic elementary school in Ukranian Village. Jenn has a degree in International Studies from the University of Chicago and is involved in Chicago’s theater, film and music scene as a composer and music director. She looks forward to using her diverse collection of travel and creative experiences to encourage confidence and advancement in our students.
EVYP is excited to take part in #GivingTuesday for the third year in a row! On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, charities, families, businesses, community centers and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving. With your support last year we almost doubled our goal and this year we hope to do the same. We set our goal at $5,000 and with your help we can achieve it! So mark your calendars and be on the lookout on Facebook for more reminders throughout the next few weeks. Make #GivingTuesday a day EVYP students will remember!
