Allister Sparks joined his first newspaper at the age of 17 and was thrown headlong into the maelstrom of South African politics.
His new book, The Sword and the Pen, traces his life from his childhood on a farm in the Eastern Cape, through his political awakening as a naïve young reporter to becoming editor of the Rand Daily Mail in 1977.
