UW Solar Goes Live

Clean energy is becoming a reality at UW's Mercer Court. With a grand total of 128 individual on Mercer Court A’s roof, this array is estimated to produce 34,470 kWh per year. An interdisciplinary team of students at UW coordinated the project in collaboration with Housing and Food Services. This project received $84,500 in grants from the UW Campus Sustainability Fund, $34,000 from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation and $50,000 from Housing and Food Services.

New Projects Funded by the CSF!

A restored green space at the foot of McCarty Hall? A new production facility for the UW Biodiesel Cooperative? Those are just some of the projects the Campus Sustainability Fund awarded during the close of their first funding cycle in February 2014, totaling over $120,000 of student lead sustainability project funding alone. Check out their website for more details on the project winners, and stay tuned for our second round of project awards in the coming weeks!

Student Food Cooperative Joins ASUW

The Student Food Cooperative has been officially accepted as a new entity of the Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW). Beginning in Fall or 2014, the ASUW Student Food Cooperative will have two paid student positions: a Manager and a Program Coordinator. Paid positions will help the Food Co-op expand their sustainable-food reach in the UW community. Read more in their recent newsletter.

Survey Results Available
Climate Action Plan Communication

We recently conducted a survey of the UW community to measure changes in personal attitudes and interests regarding campus initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, and to encourage sustainable practices. The results showed 56% of respondents were aware about the UW’s commitment to a Climate Action Plan (CAP), an improvement from 2012 when more than 53% had no awareness of the commitment. Additionally, the results indicated that of campus initiatives, respondents wanted to see the most emphasis placed on decreasing waste to landfills, decreasing solo drivers, encouraging use of U-PASS and decreasing paper purchasing. You can see the full survey statistics and key takeaways here:

UW Receives Tree Campus USA®

University of Washington was honored with 2013 Tree Campus USA® recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management. Tree Campus USA is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and sponsored by Toyota to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. University of Washington achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project. UW joins other Seattle recognitions of Tree City USA and Tree Line USA.

Lab Workshop Success

On March 24th and 25th UW Sustainability partnered with the UW Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences and the Green Labs Alliance to host two green laboratory workshops. Nearly 100 people attended, including UW researchers, EH&S professionals, and local biotech companies. The workshops highlighted strategies for reducing laboratory waste, managing chemical usage and disposal, and creating a culture of sustainability. Visit the Green Laboratory Certification webpage to learn more about how you can green your lab at UW.
