We are now UW Sustainability!

We are excited to share that UW Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability is now UW Sustainability! We updated our name to help us make better connections with the UW community while keeping sustainability as the focal point of our name and consistent with the University’s sustainability brand, “Sustainability: It's in our nature.”

We continue to promote sustainability across the University of Washington by engaging, connecting and informing members of the UW community. Our office provides sustainability resources for students, faculty and staff. We work to encourage collaboration across campus to help further sustainability goals.

The UW Sustainability team is here to help you in your sustainability efforts. Contact us with questions, ideas or to share information related to sustainability at UW.

Read the "In Our Nature" blog

UW Sustainability's "In Our Nature" blog (green.uw.edu/blog) is a place where we can showcase stories of sustainability efforts across the University of Washington.

You can find profiles of people and projects working toward sustainability on campus, videos and links, a weekly sustainability event roundup, and more. If you have a story you'd like to see here, a suggestion for the site or are interested in contributing to the blog please email sustainability@uw.edu or use our contact form.

Earth Day 2015 is Wednesday, April 22!

Earth DaySave the date! The 45th annual Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22, 2015, and the University of Washington is getting ready for a celebration!

The Earth Day Planning Committee, led by Earth Club, is finalizing the details for the central Earth Day festivities which will take place on Red Square. Green Seed Fund approves six projects for 2015

The University of Washington's Green Seed Fund approved six projects to receive funding for 2015. The Green Seed Fund, in its second year, awards money to research projects which advance sustainable research and contribute to the UW's campus sustainability goals.

A committee comprised of students, faculty and staff reviewed twenty-five proposals totaling over $1.5 million, and awarded six proposals about $250,000 in funding. The projects were selected because the review committee felt that they will contribute to UW sustainability goals, are research focused, the project scope seems well thought out and achievable, the project has a broad reach, and will contribute to greenhouse gas reductions for the University.

Details of all the projects are listed on the GSF's approved projects page, and we're going to be featuring all of the project teams on the In Our Nature blog.

Campus Sustainability Fund

After an exciting round of project proposals and deliberations, the CSF is pleased to announce that it awarded a total of $105,367 to six student-led projects in the first funding round this year! Congratulations to all the projects for crafting excellent proposals and making the UW a more environmentally conscious campus. Click to see details on all the approved projects.

Leopold Lab earns Greenest Lab title

The Leopold Pollen and Seed Laboratory headed by Professor emeritus Estella B. Leopold took the top spot as the “greenest lab” in the 2014-2015 University of Washington College of Arts and Sciences Green Laboratory Competition.

The UW Green Laboratory Certification program conducted the competition as an opportunity for labs to test their sustainability chops and strive to be the greenest research facilities on campus. Each year the competition moves to a different school or college. This year, the competition was open to all laboratories within the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Leopold Lab was the overall winner with a score of 107 percent, which includes bonus points in some areas. The Physics Instrument Shop came in second place with an overall score of 99 percent, and the Biology 302 Instructional Lab came in third at 93 percent.

This is the second UW Green Laboratory Competition. In 2013, the DeLuca Lab won the College of the Environment Green Laboratory Competition.
